Milan have downplayed their interest in Sao Paulo's coveted defender Diego Lugano.

The Italian giants are reported to have secured first option to sign the Uruguayan when Sao Paulo eventually decide to sell.

Lugano impressed in the Brazilian outfit's recent World Club Championship success, where they beat Liverpool in the final.

The Reds are rumoured to be among Lugano's admirers, while Real Madrid and Sevilla have been watching the stopper.

But Milan's interest was purported to be furthest down the track, although Leonardo, who is now on the club's backroom staff, was cool on an imminent bid.

"Lugano is a player that, in a short time, has already written his name in football's history as one of the best defenders," said Leonardo.

"The position in which he plays is one of the main problems that teams have in Europe and I am sure that Lugano could get adapted to any European team.

"Lugano is obviously on a list of very good players, but that doesn't mean that Milan is interested in him and having negotiations to buy him."

Meanwhile, Milan have also agreed a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk youngster Ruslan Zanevsky until the summer.

The striker has been training with Milan's reserves for the past few weeks and will now have a loan spell with AS Nuorese before the Rossoneri make a decision on his long-term future.

Palermo have revealed that Milan are trying to sign their central defender Andrea Barzagli.

The Italy international has emerged as a leading transfer target for Milan, with Palermo confirming the interest in the stopper.

Barzagli has established himself as the lynchpin of the Palermo back-line after joining the club in the summer of 2004.

He is rated in the €12 million (£8 million) bracket by the Sicilian side, who are coming round to the idea of selling him to Milan.

Though a deal may be placed on hold until the end of the season, Palermo sporting director Rino Foschi acknowledged that Milan are on Barzagli's trail.

"Milan like Barzagli a lot," Foschi told Corriere dello Sport.

"And I will tell you more. They are following him with a really big interest and I hope he could join the Rossoneri because Andrea is the ideal player for San Siro.

"Before now it was impossible to talk about it, but over the next months?"

Milan are believed to be reticent about meeting Palermo's valuation and are likely to spend the next few months haggling over the price, with a view to a summer transfer.

Milan have told Juventus to forget about their hopes of keeping Christian Abbiati at the club once his loan stint comes to an end.

Reports have suggested that Juve wanted to secure Abbiati on a permanent basis after an excellent six months at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

However, the Rossoneri have insisted that Abbiati will return to the San Siro when his contract at Juve expires in the summer.

"Abbiati’s situation is very clear," stated Vice-President Adriano Galliani on Monday. "He is on loan at Juventus until June, but he is still a Milan player."

The reigning champions netted Abbiati as a personal favour from Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi.

The Italian Prime Minister offered the ‘keeper once Gigi Buffon was ruled out for six months after damaging his shoulder in a pre-season friendly between the two sides.

Although Abbiati did initially make a few mistakes, he’s been a major reason why the Old Lady are currently nine points clear at the top of the table.

Abbiati, who now faces competition from a fit-again Buffon, had become something of a forgotten figure in Italian football after the exceptional form of Nelson Dida.

Nevertheless, Abbiati may regain the No 1 shirt for the Rossoneri next term after some decidedly shaky performances from the Brazilian of late.

Dida, who is set to start in goal for the Selecao in the World Cup, made a costly mistake last night which gave Parma the lead – even if Milan won the game 4-3.

Milan have completed the signing of Brazilian striker Marcio Amoroso from Sao Paulo.

Amoroso has inked a one-and-a-half-year deal at the Giuseppe Meazza after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

The 31-year-old is highly rated in Italy after successful spells in Serie A with Udinese and Parma.

"AC Milan announce to have found the agreement with the player Marcio Dos Santos Amoroso who signed a deal until 2007, June 30," read a club statement.

Milan moved to bring the skilful forward back to Italy after agreeing to let Christian Vieri leave for Monaco.

Amoroso will battle with Andrei Shevchenko, Alberto Gilardino and Filippo Inzaghi for a place in the Milan side.

I can't understand that the AC Milan is not replace Vieri with a younger forward than a 31-year old Amoroso...

Milan's new striker Marcio Amoroso has revealed his delight at sealing a move to the San Siro.

The 31-year-old, who won the Club World Championship with Sao Paolo, was unveiled by the Italian club on Saturday. He is now setting his sights on success at Milan.

"I'm here to help the team get some big results," he declared. "I've just won the Club World Championship with Sao Paulo, but now I want to continue winning with Milan. I couldn't refuse their offer."

Amoroso did admit that he was not currently in peak condition, but insisted that would not be a problem for long.

"The last match I played was on December 18, so I haven't got 90 minutes in my legs at the moment," he commented.

"I am a player who finds his fitness quickly though, but until then I will have to be used as a substitute."
