CONCACAF Champions League
Pumas prevail 3:0 over Harbour View, complete Champions League field
9/4/2008 - Francisco “Paco” Palencia scored twice in the second half after missing a penalty kick to lead Pumas UNAM to a 3:0 victory over Harbour View on Thursday, completing the 16-team field for the CONCACAF Champions League ™.
Palencia scored in the 65th and 91st minutes and also set up Jehu Chiapas for another in the 88th, putting Pumas into Group B along with the USA league champion Houston Dynamo, CD Luis Angel Firpo of El Salvador and San Francisco FC.
Unlike the other eight Preliminary Round series, the Pumas-Harbour View match was contested as a one-off playoff because the first leg in Jamaica last week was cancelled due to Hurricane Gustav.
Pumas is the fourth Mexican side to qualify for the Group Stage, joining CD SC Cruz Azul in Group A, Atlante FC in Group C and Club Santos Laguna in Group D.
Palencia had a chance to put Pumas ahead in the 35th minute after Fernando Morales was brought down by goalkeeper Dwayne Miller, who was ejected for the foul, but he sent his penalty high.
Pumas finally went ahead in the second half when replacement keeper Michaud Barret couldn’t corral Chiapas’ cross, and Palencia capitalized on the loose ball.
Palencia sent a cross to an unmarked Chiapas for the second goal and then completed the scoring from the top of the area.

9/24/2008 - MEXICO CITY – Nineteen-year-old defender David Cabrera scored twice in the first half and Pumas UNAM dominated CD Luis Angel Firpo 3:0 Wednesday night to take control of Group B in the CONCACAF Champions League™.
Cabrera, who has played only twice for Pumas in the Mexican Apertura so far this season – both times as a late-game substitute, scored in the 12th and 37th minutes to help give the Mexican side a three-goal lead at halftime.
Orlando Pineda added another goal in the 35th for Pumas, which was coming off a 1:0 loss at home to Mexican Apertura leader San Luis on Sunday.
The victory put Pumas atop Group B with four points, two better than San Francisco FC of Panama and three ahead of the Houston Dynamo. Firpo, which had its first scheduled game postponed until 26 November because of damage in Houston from Hurricane Ike last week, remained at the bottom of the group without a point.
Cabrera, who turned 19 on 7 September and whose only other start this year was last week in Pumas’ 1:1 Champions League draw against San Francisco, was part of a lineup that included eight regulars. He scored with a header from the six after a short corner for his first, and was left unmarked on the back post to drive in a deflected cross for his second.
Pineda and Cabrera’s second goal were nearly identical, with Pineda finishing a deflected cross from Francisco Palencia.
The result extended Firpo’s winless streak to three, following two straight 0:0 draws in the Salvadoran league. It has won only once in eight matches, leaving it in next-to-last place in the 10-team Apertura standings.
