Berbatov IN - £30.75M + F. Campbell loan at deadline
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mai...bentley214.xml
Quote:
Manchester United have agreed to pay Tottenham £28 million for Dimitar Bebatov, who have set aside £17 million of that fee to sign Blackburn's David Bentley in a move that could spark a transfer domino effect.
Tottenham had been warned by United that they would be not be held to ransom in their pursuit to sign Berbatov, after they had an initial £20 million approach rebuffed over the weekend, setting a maximum limit of £25 million on the Bulgarian striker.
But reports suggest that both clubs have since reached a comprise for £2 million less than the original £30 million asking price Spurs had demanded for the player, who has scored 27 goals in the Premier League since his arrival from German side Bayer Leverkusen two years ago.
United want to pay Tottenham a fee of £18 million up front with the rest of the transfer payable after success-related clauses and appearances, similar to the arrangement they struck with the north London club for Michael Carrick in 2006.
Berbatov, 27, has made no secret of his desire to move to the champions in past and his agent Emil Danchev confirmed: "Manchester United have expressed interest in Berbatov but I cannot comment on the issue further."
|
£18 million upfront, with the fee rising to a possible £28 million.

Not a chance that Spurs sell him to us for under £20m total. The rumor states only £18m is paid up front, with the rest being incentives. If he reaches those incentives he would have been well worth the price (ie winning the Prem and CL), much like Carrick.

Assuming that the Berbatov deal is done, then this might be the only transfer business of the summer for United ...

There's a rumor that Sunderland are interested in taking Saha on loan for the season with a view to a £3m full transfer later. If that does happen, it would free up the 9 ...

to be honest... i think that a fit saha is better than a fit berbatov in united's top11. does anyone else agree??? i have always liked the way saha plays, i hope he can really get a run this season without an injury... i think he'll be fantastic.

£28m for Berbatov is entirely too much IMO. United could sign Huntelaar for around £20m I suspect. I have no idea why they have this fixation on Berbatov. If United do sign him, I hope I'm proved wrong, but I am just not convinced that he is the missing link.
On another note, Aguero indicated he wants to stay @ Atletico for one or two more years - United should seriously considering a buy & loan deal for him and secure his services for the start of the 2009 season ...

couldnt agree more about aguero... he is going to be amazing, and i would love him at united next season (2009-10). i would rather do that than sign berbatov this year i think.... i like berbatov, but i just dont think hes what united are looking for......

Sir Alex talked about the Berbatov transfer in an exclusive interview with United.no before the tour of South Africa.
I’ll translate the quotes for you. It’s already been translated from English to Norwegian so it probably won’t be his exact words.
“We’ve put in a bid for Berbatov, and we’re hoping to acquire his signing. He has impressed us for some time and could be a nice addition to the squad”
“We’re not in a hurry, but we’re hoping to sit down with Tottenham for some constructive negotiations in the near future.”
“I don’t wish to say too much about the situation at this point in time, but we will handle it the CORRECT way”

According to the article it's not £28m, it's £18m up front, with the rest being paid if Berbatov and United reach certain levels. If we go on to win the Prem and CL, with Berbatov scoring 20 goals a season, he'd be well worth the money. Did you think Carrick was worth £18m when we bought him? In his two season here we've won the league twice and the CL, I'd say that was money well spent.
Berbatov is a proven goal scorer in England, Huntleaar isn't. There are numerous examples of players scoring for fun in Holland, yet having trouble to find the net here. Not to mention Berbatov's link up play is miles better than Huntlaar.

As good as Aguero is, is spending that much money on a 5'7 striker a smart idea when we already have Tevez and Rooney, who play the same position?
