Carlos Quieroz Gone, Mick Phelan is the new assistant manager!
Queiroz Denies Benfica Move
Quote:
Carlos Queiroz has denied recent reports suggesting his interest in coaching Benfica for the 2008/09 season...
The Manchester United assistant manager has been widely tipped to take the managerial post at the Estádio da Luz ever since José Antonio Camacho resigned as coach earlier this month.
But the Portuguese tactician has denied such claims, revealing that he has not held talks with anyone from Benfica about a move to the Lisbon club.
"This is something I do not want to talk about, because I do not want to contribute to speculations concerning Benfica, a great club and institution," he said.
"Every statement released by the Portuguese press in direct speech is false," he continued. "I have never commented on Benfica's current situation to anyone.
"But it is always an honour and a privilege to know that a great institution like Benfica may ponder on my name to serve their needs."
The former South Africa coach returned to Old Trafford in 2004 following an unsuccessful spell at Real Madrid and seems to be the favourite to succeed Alex Ferguson when the Scottish coach decides to retire.

He's been bloody brilliant since he returned from Real, SAF clearly sees something in him as well and I think for the sake of stability (especially in the Portuguese contingent) it would be try and persuade him to stay.

Ferguson expects Queiroz to stay
Quote:
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident his assistant Carlos Queiroz will not join Portuguese side Benfica next season.
Reports in Portugal said Queiroz was wanted to replace Fernando Chalana, who took temporary charge when head coach Jose Antonio Camacho left this month.
But Ferguson insists there have been no approaches from Benfica for the 55-year-old Portuguese.
"I can't speak for Carlos but I'm quite certain he'll not be going to Benfica next year," said Ferguson.
Queiroz returned to United in 2004 after a one-year spell as Real Madrid manager.
He has an impressive CV that also includes stints as head coach for Portugal, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa.
Ferguson added: "The Real Madrid experience was something else. It was a job he had to take.
"But Carlos learned how difficult it is. He wasn't allowed to buy and instead told to sell players."
Benfica, who have been forced to play second fiddle to FC Porto on the domestic front in recent years, parted company with their Spanish coach Camacho on 9 March.
He was replaced on an interim basis by former Portuguese international Chalana, who will be in charge to the end of the season.

I agree that the Real Madrid job he did was dictated to him by their Board.
He would be the favourite for SAF's job when SAF retires.

Ferguson hails impact of Queiroz
Quote:
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he believes his assistant Carlos Queiroz will be at Old Trafford for a "long time" to come.
Ferguson hailed Queiroz's contribution to United's Champions League final win over Chelsea in Moscow this week.
"I feel he is at his club here. What happens after I go is not my domain," Ferguson said.
"But there is no doubt I think Carlos will be here for a long time. As long as me anyway."
Queiroz's future has been the subject of speculation, with Benfica among his admirers.
There are also rumours he might be offered the Portugal job if, as expected, Luis Felipe Scolari stands down after Euro 2008.
Ferguson admitted: "There has been a lot of talk about him recently and I am sure the Portugal job would be a big attraction for him."
But he insisted that the Portuguese assistant would want to stay in Manchester.
And the Scot said the impact of Queiroz behind the scenes could not be overstated.
"I am a bit of a dinosaur in that respect. I have recognised progress needed to be made in different areas," he said.
"We have five physios now. I would have been happy with that, plus a nutritionist, a weight coach, a fitness coach.
"I even brought an orthoptist to assist on the eye training. That kind of thing is fine.
"But the levels we are going to now are unbelievable. Carlos has increased it in all sorts of ways.
"The entire medical side is fantastic. I don't think there is anywhere better in the world now.
"That is all down to Carlos' vision of the future which I would not have had."
Ferguson also said he hoped Queiroz's season as coach of Real Madrid could play a role in helping to secure the future of star winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real coach Bernd Schuster and president Ramon Calderon have both expressed a desire to see Ronaldo at The Bernabeu.
That led to Ferguson accusing Real Madrid of lacking morals in their pursuit of the Portugal star, but the Scot said: "Carlos has the experience of being at Real Madrid.
"That is helping us now with all the nonsense we have to talk about.
"Carlos' experience means he can advise Cristiano quite well about that kind of club. That is a plus point for us."

Quieroz really has done a fantastic job, more noticeably in his second spell than in his first but just awesome. I've got to say I wouldn't mind if he got the job when Ferguson chooses to leave.

Do not be surprised by his statement. Our record in the knockout rounds in Europe has improved dramatically under Queiroz.

Carlos deserves great credit
Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to his No.2 Carlos Queiroz for his excellent work both across the course of the season and ahead of the Champions League final.
The Reds' boss believes his assistant's work was key to United's dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in Moscow.
Queiroz has been linked with a number of managerial positions since his return to Old Trafford after a brief stint at Real Madrid's helm. But Sir Alex fully expects his No.2 to be part of United's future successes for many years to come.
"The Portugal job would be a big attraction [for Carlos], but I feel that he's at his club," declared the manager.
"He's well respected and the job he did in terms of preparation for the final was absolutely fantastic. He's improving a lot of things at the club.
"I've realised that progress needs to be made in different areas which I'm not an expert on, for instance the medical side.
"Carlos has increased the medical side of things to a different level which is fantastic and I don't think there is anyone better in the world than us [in that area] - that's all down to Carlos' vision for the future, I must admits I wouldn't have had that vision."
When asked whether or not Queiroz may eventually succeed him, Sir Alex insisted: "That is not my domain. But, listen, there is absolutely no doubt that Carlos will be here for a long time, I'm sure of that. As long as me anyway!"

I think Quieroz will definately be the man to take over from Ferguson. He's making himself the perfect candidate, and he's certain to get Ferguson's recommendation. The only worry is that assistants can often have trouble getting away from being the player's man and being the boss instead. But our squad shouldn't be that immature by this point, and Quieroz is more of a father figure than a mate to the players.

Salford United fans should be very upset at the thoughts of this idiot replacing Fergie. He's been sacked from EVERY managerial job he's had. He's a good number 2, he's an awful manager.

Benitez was sacked from every managerial job he'd had until he got the Valencia post, what's your point?

QUEIROZ TO LEAVE UNITED FOR PORTUGAL
Quote:
Sir Alex Ferguson's anger at Luiz Felipe Scolari advising Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United is set to be exacerbated by reports that his assistant, Carlos Queiroz, is on the verge of replacing the Chelsea-bound Brazilian as Portugal's national coach.
According to a report in The Sunday Express, 'The Portuguese have snapped up the Manchester United assistant boss to replace Scolari and his departure will be a hammer blow for Ferguson, who was keen for the vastly-experienced 55-year-old Queiroz to take over from him when he quits as United boss in two or three years time.'
Queiroz's departure could also have an important repercussion in another respect as Ferguson has previously named his assistant as a key factor in United's attempt to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at the club. 'Queiroz enjoys a good relationship with the much-coveted forward and his departure would weaken United's chances of holding onto the 23-year-old,' the newspaper notes.

I'll believe it when I see it, Quieroz is massively important at United and he knows it. He's a favourite for the job when Ferguson leaves and SAF has said that'll be within 3 years... I hope he stays.

I suspect that if Ronaldo is leaving to Real Madrid, Quieroz will probably follow him out of OT ...

Why? By all accounts he's next in line when Fergie leaves. You think he's going to give that up just because Ronaldo leaves?
