Rio Ferdinand Thread - Signs New 5-Year Deal
Rio a Red for life
Quote:
Rio Ferdinand says he hopes to have signed a new contract with United by the end of the season after stating his desire to stay with the Reds for life.
The defender, who joined in July 2002, has two more years left to run on his current deal and insists he is keen to stay put for the remainder of his career.
"I have two more years on my contract and I'd like to finish my career at United," revealed the 29-year-old in an interview with BBC Radio Leeds.
"The club have made an approach to my agent but there's so many games it's difficult to get around the table.
"By the end of the season, if not sooner, it should be done and dusted."
The centre-back also reflected on his recent outing as England captain during last week's friendly in France.
"Being given the duty was a real honour for me, I'd love to be the captain of England, who wouldn't?" he said.
"It's not going to be the be all and end all, it won't make or break my career or make me lose sleep at night.
"I'm still going to have the same thoughts and apply myself the same way regardless of who is being picked as captain. I want to win things and we need eleven captains out there not just the one."

It's great to see him change his attitude after everything that happened last time his contract was being renewed. He's matured so much over the last 2 seasons and has been the best CB in the league by far this season (even statistically...)
He's 3rd in line for the captaincy at United, perhaps one day he will be captain full time. I wouldn't mind that, although Rooney and Ronaldo will probably both be big candidates when Neville hands it over.

Reds keen to tie up Rio deal
Quote:
Sir Alex Ferguson says negotiations with Rio Ferdinand over a new contract are moving forward.
The influential 29-year-old centre-half says he is keen to sign a new deal and remain at Old Trafford for the rest of his career.
Reds boss Sir Alex echoed those thoughts, adding: "Of course [we want to sort out a new deal]. We’ve been negotiating for a few weeks now. I don’t think we’re far away, but negotiations these days are never easy.
"Rio's form has been outstanding. I thought in the second half against Roma his interceptions in particular were excellent. He's got great speed which allows him to beat forwards to the ball."
Ferdinand still has two years to run on his deal, but said earlier this week: "I'd like to finish my career at United.

I'm absolutely delighted that Rio is staying, but he hasn't time to get around a table ?!
Now, does he think he's talking to his fellow twats in Peckham, or does he think Manchester United fans are fucking idiots ?
I have a lot of respect for players and the money they earn, but when they come up with this crap............
I wonder can he find the time to shite....................

^I think that's a bit harsh tbh, it's not uncommon for players to want to begin negotiations after busy football periods...
Ferdinand agrees new Man Utd deal
Quote:
Rio Ferdinand has agreed a new five-year contract with Manchester United, according to his agent.
The 29-year-old's representative, Pini Zahavi, told the Daily Express: "Rio is very happy there, he wanted to stay at United and they wanted him to stay.
"Of course he could have gone to another club, but he did not want to."
Zahavi added that he thought the deal, which is believed to be worth £130,000 a week, will not be the defender's last at Old Trafford.
He feels Ferdinand can continue playing into his next decade and surpass the remarkable achievement of Italy and AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, who is still playing at the highest level, aged 39.
"I believe he can play longer than Maldini - and they believe so at Manchester United as well," said Zahavi.
Ferdinand has two years remaining on his current contract and talks over an extension had been planned for the summer.
However, it seems those negotiations have been brought forward and reports suggest Ferdinand now needs only to sign the new agreement.
Signed from Leeds for a British record £30m in 2002, Ferdinand has become the key figure in United's defence and has formed an excellent partnership this season with Nemanja Vidic.

that is pretty ambitious to think about the possibility of rio having the career longevity of maldini... that is a tremendous task and requires discipline of the highest regard.
honestly though, rio is the only CB in the world at the moment (maybe nesta...) that i could see being fully effective until his late 30s... he is a wonderful player

Ferdinand signs new deal
Rio Ferdinand has signed a new five-year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until he is almost 35, in which time he foresees plenty of success ahead.
The centre-half has reached the zenith of his career, with performances that have been consistently outstanding throughout the season.
Ferdinand, who joined the Reds in summer 2002 from Leeds United, is excited about the future ahead.
“This is a fantastic club and I'm delighted to sign a new contract," he said on Thursday.
"It's a great honour to be part of this trophy-winning team and to share in the success, which I am sure, will continue for many seasons to come. I'd like to thank the manager, the coaching staff, the players and the fans for the tremendous support they have given me since I joined the club."
Sir Alex Ferguson was clearly delighted to safeguard the future of one of his most important players.
"Rio’s contribution this season has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance," said the Reds boss, who intimated that the 29-year-old is a future regular captain in the making.
"He has matured into his role at the club and has shown, when needed, what a great captain and leader he can be. I am delighted Rio has signed a new contract."
