The question is who will we play up front?

Giggs is a definate but with who? Apparently Saha and Solskjaer are back in training while Tevez was originally pencilled in for next weekend. Will any of them be brought back early or will we reorganise the players we have fit to try and cope?

Without Tevez, Rooney, Saha, Solskjaer, Hargreaves and Anderson I'd guess we'll see the following:

VDS

Brown-Rio-Vidic-Silvestre

Fletcher-Carrick-Scholes-Evra

Ronaldo-Giggs

However Nani may start, Anderson or Hargreaves may be deemed fit enough, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them on the bench. I also expect to see Tevez on the bench.

The other question is where the hell is Eagles? He was quite impressive in preseason and I kind of expected him to be on the bench (considering our lack on attacking options atm) but he wasn't. If he is injured then that is more great news. If not I wouldn't be surprised if he starts on the right wing instead of Fletcher.

Basically we have a large and versatile squad so trying to predict the starting 11 without knowing the fitness status of everyone is near impossible.

Nani start away at quite possibly worst ground in EPL? Bit risky.

I think Tevez has to be thrown in at the deep end.

He can't be that unfit, he spent half the summer playing games with Argentina so he can't have lost all that match fitness in a few weeks...

Play him for about 60mins till we get a goal and then bring him off - we need a striker on the pitch...

Only playing our wingers up front doesn't work, I didn't personally understand y Ronaldo wasn't really up top today but even so I don't think it will work.

Silvestre got injured as well today, what's the extent of that?

I'd like to see:

VDS

Brown-Rio-Vidic-Evra

Ronaldo-Carrick-Scholes-Nani

Tevez-Giggs

very risky but we need to get started quickly or face falling behind.

Unfortunately imo SAF has said even if he had got Tevez sooner he wouldn't play him until the Man City game, but maybe Rooney's absence will force him to play him.

I think Quieroz said in his post match interview that Tevez will definitely be in the squad for the Pompey game.

Giggs up front does not work imo, he is better of on the left or middle. Ronaldo up front neither as we need him creating the goals but one of them will have to play up front or even both due to our resources so i prefer giggs with Nani and Tevez Playing.

VDS

Brown
Rio
Vidic
Evra

Ronaldo
Carrick
Scholes
Nani

Tevez
Giggs

Hopefully thats our team.

I see no-one's backing Sheasy to go up top

I think Hargreaves could start here - he played in Dunfermline, didn't he? I'd lookk at this as a possibility:

----------VDS
Brown-Rio-Vidic-Evra
Carrick-Harg-Scholes
Nani--Ronaldo--Giggs

I'd be pleased to see Tevez start, but I doubt he will - Ferguson always takes hold of any opportunity to throw a signing into a derby, and Tevez having his fitness shot gives a good excuse there. We could do the 433 with Anderson instead of Hargreaves, playing as a link between midfield and attack. There's still a lot of different options we have, even without a central striker.

Tevez is in the squad? That's good news, although it remains to be seen whether he'll start.

I can't say I'm surprised. With all our other strikers injured even if he isn't fit he'll be on the bench at the very least.

Carlitos is a grafter, perfect game for him although I hope most of our footy does the talking and he wont need to do any grafting.

I think this is the team Fergie will start with:

-----------------------VDS------------------------

Wes---------Rio------------Vida-------Tweety

Ronnie-----Carrick-------Scholes------Paddy

----------------Giggs----Tevez-----------------

Subs: Kuszczak - Fletch - Nani - O'Shea - Pique

well i think fergie will echo what most of us say here, tevez will start or be on the bench.

as kyan pointed out he cant be that unfit.i mean the man looks like a big pile of energy in a human suit.

giggs will be up front thats for sure, and perhaps we will have normal wingers on the flanks this time.guess evra is better suited for a defense position then on the wing.another player comes to mind now, park.

if we had park it would be good back too....but to bad he is also out so its either hrow your new winger, or a make shift winger or put in fletcher.at least wth fletcher we can be assured he runs faster then evra.

in this current situation wth the given option we have wch is best???changing the line up by moving your players in to other positions or changing the formation to suit what you have???wch one ???

karma is weird i mean dont you guys think its weird that last season we had defenders going down 1 by 1, and now we are left almost wth no strikers

Playing Portsmouth is very tricky. Man United certainly need a certain defensive stability in order to curb their forward play which could be impressive at their ground. Nevertheless, that could be a good thing actually, as this allows Man United to play on the counter ; which is their forte really.

Hence, the key to this match is for Ferdinand and Vidic to be at their absolute top of their game, unlike last season. And I am confident that the likes of Carrick,Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo would be able to provide the ammunition for Tevez to score. Besides this Portsmouth also have a solid defence protected by the Muntari...And Portsmouth away, being a very bogey fixture for Man United, this would be a tight tight game, however I RECKON, SIR ALEX would have really rile up the team for this game..just to make up for the 1st game disappointment....
