Papers: Smith wants talks

Smith's up to summit
Alan Smith wants talks with Sir Alex Ferguson this week before deciding whether to quit Manchester United.
The England striker is due to return to training, but Middlesbrough and Everton head the queue of clubs interested in taking him if United sell.
However, Smith will not leave Old Trafford until he is sure his first-team chances are remote – and he plans to discuss his future with Ferguson to find out the answers.

Meanwhile, Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry is quoted in The Daily Telegraph calling for temporary moves to be banned in the Premiership. His comments coincide with United's reported deal with West Ham to land Carlos Tevez on an initial two-year loan before having the option of securing the Argentinean permanently.

The same publication hint that Reds winger Kieran Richardson is a potential target for Manchester City. Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson took over at Eastlands last week.

New signings bring options

Edwin van der Sar says United's new signings have provided Sir Alex Ferguson with the option to play a number of different systems next season.

The summer captures of Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson have now not only boosted the numbers in the champions' squad, they have provided the Reds' boss with a number of alternatives for a host of attacking positions.

Van der Sar is excited by the new arrivals, but remains intrigued as to how the United boss will organise his starting eleven come August.

"It will be interesting to see what the manager decides to do," he explained on his personal website at Icons.com. "He may want to play a different system or keep things the same, so we'll just have to wait and see. There's still a lot of work to do and decisions to be made before the season starts.

"We've signed Nani, Anderson, Hargreaves and it looks like Tevez is on his way as well, but only Hargreaves is here at the moment. They are obviously very good players and have been brought in to strengthen the squad.

"Most of them are coming from different leagues to England so they will need time to adjust and it is up to the manager how he introduces them to the side. I'm sure he is looking to strengthen the squad for the future."

The 36-year-old stopper feels the mix of youth and experience within the squad is now at its optimum balance.

"We have a very good mix of youth and experience in the side now, with experienced players like Giggsy, Scholes and Gary Neville acting as great examples for the younger guys," he explained. "But you also have to remember that some of the young lads like Wayne and Cristiano have been here three or four years.

"Of course we hope to continue to play with the sort of style that was successful last season. You always want to play beautiful football but ultimately the most important thing is to win."

AC Milan to offer £7.5M for Man Utd's Rossi

AC Milan will offer Manchester United £7.5 million for striker Giuseppe Rossi in the next 72 hours.

Milan chief Adriano Galliani will hold transfer talks with the club's president, Silvio Berlusconi, tomorrow and will raise the subject of signing Rossi as a replacement for Ricardo Oliveira, who is joining Real Zaragoza today.

Parma have already made a £6 million offer for the Italy U21 international, however they will be outbid by Milan with Galliani already indicating to United - via intermediaries - that a £7.5 million proposal will soon be tabled.

For his part, Rossi welcomes the interest of Milan and would be delighted to pull on a Rossonera shirt next season.

Fiorentina prepare bid for Man Utd's Rossi

Fiorentina sports chief Pantaleo Corvino plans to make an offer for Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi this week.

Corvino is in London for talks with Arsenal over Freddie Ljungberg and also has met with United officials in the last 24 hours about their interest in Rossi.

United are ready to sell the Italy U21 star, who is also wanted by AC Milan, for £7 million.

it will be tempting for him but not the price wise, as you said tal fergie still has plans for him.still young and he has proven himself in the reserves and thats a fact that cant be over looked.come this new season he will be impressife for us when he gets the nod.

i would sell him... he has at minimum 6 players ahead of him in attack... hes basically useless at the moment. if someone offers 8-10 for him... hes gone in my mind. ideally, he would be loaned to roy keane to get premier league experience, but i highly doubt he will agree to that... unless he REALLY wants to play for united one day

Agreed with Jlae - Rossi may have a bright future as a technical, playmaking forward, but do we need that? Are we going to need that any time between now and 3 years time? Atm, we have so many attackers ahead of him, and if we were to play him, he wouldn't make a very good focul point for us, nor would he be a very good roamer, lacking both pace and strength. He'd succeed at an Italian club, like Parma, Fiorentina, or, in time, Milan, but with us, you have to question his role.

There's the idea of bringing him into a midfield role, which I like - I think that, with some hard work on some other points of his game, such as longer-rang passing and work rate, he could make a very good "replacement" for Paul Scholes. I believe that this is the best way Rossi can hope to have a future at OT - converting to midfield, even if it means fine-tuning his attributes.

Sven Goran Eriksson has taken on hard-man Roy Keane with an audacious bid to hijack Sunderland's £5.5million bid for Manchester United winger Kieran Richardson.
The new Manchester City manager, who handed the 22-year-old his England debut, made contact with the player's advisers in a bid to persuade him to move to United's local rivals.
Eriksson is ready to splash out a sizeable chunk of the £50m transfer budget he has been promised by new City owner Thaksin Shinawatra on Richardson), having yesterday completed the £8.8m signing of Reggina striker Rolando Bianchi.
Everton are also interested in Richardson but it has come down to a fight between Sunderland and City over who gets a player boss Sir Alex Ferguson has deemed surplus to requirements.

Most of the tabloids, however, have devoted large coverage to the Tevez transfer saga and quote Sir Alex saying "I think we have got our player". The Argentina international's agent, Kia Joorabchian, has revealed the striker will fly into Manchester on Tuesday for a medical.

Richardson on his way??

Roy Keane was celebrating a double transfer success last night after Kieran Richardson agreed to switch to Sunderland and Michael Chopra completed his £5million move from Cardiff.

Keane outbid Everton to land Manchester United's Richardson, 22, in a £5.5m deal The England international will become one of the highest earners at the Stadium of Light on £45,000 a week. Chopra, 23, has signed a four-year contract.
