I'm pretty sure Hargreaves is one target obviously.
I don't think Bale is another though, it doesn't make sense to me as there are other positions which need backup ahead of LB (and for the price that's touted we may as well at least sign a real LW if thats what we want him for).
I think our 2nd target will be a winger, like u said UF, Nani or Ribery have been mentioned, Nani is much more likely imo, as Ribery has been more heavily linked with other clubs. but I don't think we'll get Nani either as I see it to be similar to the Zokora situation, last summer he was being rumoured to be joining either United, Arsenal or Spurs and in the end he joined Spurs. With lots of people saying Nani is overrated I can see the same thing happening which leaves me stumped as to who we'd sign for our wings.
Our 3rd target is definitely a striker imo. Whether or not it's Berbatov is a completely different matter, and personally I don't think it will be, for 2 main reasons, price & because of his reaffirmation of his commitment to Spurs (I don't believe everything players say but when a player says something like that it's usually harder to sign them), which also makes me think Torres is unlikely. Although because we've reportedly been after Torres for so long and because he's younger I think he might be the more likely option.
I'm quite looking forward to the window as I have no idea how it's gonna pan out.

We were losely linked with other wingers like Puerta, Navas, that Russian guy, etc. The only ones whose names are recurring, however, are Nani and Ribery. Bale is touted as a target for the wing, but if he did come in, he'd be more of a left midfield player, than the roaming option Giggs gives us. Not to mention he's just 17. But when a player comes around with that talent at that age, you have to consider him. An alternative to Berbatov could possibly be Darren Bent - I'd certainly prefer him to Defoe. If we got in Berbatov and Hargreaves, than I'd call that enough anyway. Although people would like to see a winger - and I wouldn't mind either. But the tough question is - who is there?

a mid-fielder is a sure shot with hargreaves, a striker and maybe another winger possibly.
there are lots of reputable forwards but on the flanks who???any clear names besides the likes of youths??
seriously besides rooney, ronaldo and messi at the moment there are not much of them who is like "bomb" lots of potential onesa but not an instant impact maker.

robben?
probably a long shot, but wasnt he unhappy at chelsea earlier in the season. there are few players with as good of a left foot as mr. robben. saying that, i hate him, and think hes a cheating prick... BUT, he is interesting to think about because he is so young/talented

Hargreaves seems to be more of a long shot now that Bayern have upped the price (again). Ribery is starting to look around, although since OM could still qualify for the CL, that option may not be available either.
Berbatov (too expensive) & Defoe - unlikely. Huntelaar is apparently on his way to Juve (unfortunately!), so United are still in the striker market. Lasse Nilsson (10 goals this season) is apparently interested in a move out of the Eredivisie, then of course there's Alves (34 goals) ,and Koevermans (22 goals) also in the Eredivisie that are worth a look. Alves is 26 and Koevermans is 28 - so they should be able to fit in quite well ...
I'm sure someone who is more into the Dutch leagues can help me out with the scouting on the Eredivisie

Robben can fk right off, he's rejected us before and we don't need to come back for him.
Here are some of today's rumours:
Man Utd are close to pulling out of buying Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich as the German club have upped their price for the England man. (Various)
Alternatively, Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be handed a £50m transfer kitty - with Owen Hargreaves the number one target. (Daily Mirror)
Spain striker Fernando Torres, Southampton's Gareth Bale, Spurs' Dimitar Berbatov and Reading's Steve Sidwell are also on United's wants list. (Daily Mirror)
I'm generally liking them 8)

Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o is Manchester United's top transfer target. (Daily Mail)
Good, if he's for sale SAF has to do EVERYTHING in his power to get him
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manchester United want to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Nani in a £17.5m swoop. (Daily Mirror)
That's a lot of money for an unknown, too much maybe, especially when we only bought Ronaldo for £12M
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
A £9m release clause in Newcastle forward Michael Owen's contract has alerted Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. (Various)
I don't mind, I'm one of the few it seems who still rate Owen and he's a great striker. He has had his injury trouble but I believe they're behind him now. That said I've never been overly impressed by him and Rooney up front for England.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tottenham are determined to hang on to striker Dimitar Berbatov, despite growing interest from Manchester United. (Daily Mirror)
We already knew this, he's a great player but I think he's staying
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunderland manager Roy Keane wants to make on-loan Manchester United defender Danny Simpson a permanent signing. (Daily Mirror)
If he's as good as he's supposed to be then United had better not sell him on a permanent deal
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marseille winger Franck Ribery has said that Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan are clubs he "dreams" of joining. (The Independent)
Again, this has come up a few times, but he's hardly narrowing down his options

Well he's ruled out Bayern, Lyon and Inter - so that's a start. Arsenal could be outbided , he wouldn't be getting a first 11 place at Barca or Chelsea. That brings it to us, AC and Real. AC Milan, however, don't usually play wingers, have their maestro midfield/forward link in Kaka. So you could, from that, have it narrowed down to Real Madrid and Manchester United. The turmoil at Real, with the coach, board and team troubles, could make us a more attractive option.
Edit: That's Ribery btw, just incase.

Well - Barca slapped a £40m price tag on Eto'o, so that makes that deal unlikely. Steve Sidwell on a free transfer is certainly interesting (and of course ... cheap!)
I think the Nani price tag might be a bit high - considering what we paid for Ronaldo. However - the price tag is a result of Ronaldo's success - that type of dynamic player has a premium price tag.
Ribery is intriguing, but I suspect his first choice is still Arsenal if they can sort out the Wenger situation beyond next season.
Bale & Richards are way way too expensive IMO, but again, it's a premium on young talent. I'm sure United have identified other (more economical) options for the back four.
Now - if United were to pick up Sidwell on a free, then splashing around £30m on Eto'o and up to £20m on Ribery would be a bumper summer .... but we'll have to wait and see!
EDIT: Oh yes - and signing Robben is a non-starter of an idea for me. He snubbed United quite openly so I don't see him ever signing for them (ditto Mikel when he finally decides to leave Chelski).

jlae11 - no harm no foul. You were looking at it from a talent perspective. Robben may not be at SB too much longer anyways - I thought I read somewhere he and "The Special One" had a bit of a falling out. So he may well be on the move to another club, but most likely not United. And if by some misalignment of the planets he did wind up at OT, he'd have a hell of a job winning the fans over!

Berba's Wage Will Double
Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov will be offered a new contract to make sure he stays at White Hart Lane. Berbatov has become the hottest property in the Premiership, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United believed to be hugely impressed by his first season at Spurs. The Bulgarian hit-man is on comparatively low money in Premiership terms. The four-year deal he signed when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £10.9million last summer is worth £22,000 a week. That has alerted the Premiership's big guns and Spurs are moving quickly to make sure that Berbatov's future does not turn into another transfer saga. The club sold Michael Carrick to Manchester United for £18.6m last summer after losing a battle to keep him and are determined not to let that happen again.

this came out in the mirror today. it seems berbatov is getting his value with help from the press .
i wonder where he will be at the start of next season.
