i see any competition worth winning, it puts a trophy next to your name and gets you a european place.

Champions League, Premiership, FA Cup, Carling Cup < they are all worth winning

and for a new manager to this country, a great start is to win the first final

totaly agree , at the end of the day the carlin cup is the diffrence between winning the trebble and winning the qaud .

so why disrespect it ?

great attitude rob and one ur manager has is even better , he wants to win everythink and people like that deserve great things !

i dont mean for us because the champions league is where we are. but for other teams, theres a european place for the winners

what ever people say, its still a trophy to be won and its important to win trophies like you keep saying

Yes but the only reason we have fielded a full strength team, is because we had to, to beat Chelsea, had Chelsea had lower class players (under their current top 11) they'd play them...and you know it's true.

It is worth winning, but out of the four, it is the least important.

Any true United fan knows exactly why we don't ever want to win the mickey mouse; it is the kiss of death in the real competitions. Whenever we've lost the mickey mouse final we've gone on to win bigger things that season (FA in 83, Cup Winners Cup in 91, double in 94, title in 03) when we actually won the horrid thing we totally blew up in the rest of the season and threw away a championship. This pattern is not uncommon. Over the years teams winning the league cup fall asleep for the rest of the season. I'd rather have hungry players come the sharp-end of the season thanks.

For the record Fergie lost his first semi with us back in 97. Dortmund beat us 1-0 in both legs... then again didn't we get to the semi finals of the centenary cup? We got beat anyway, but off the top of my head I can't remember what round it was.

i think the main people wanted to win thsi cup, is becuase the league is chelseas bar a major fuck up, i hope they do but i cant see it to be honest, also the chances of us winning the chmps league without a fully fit ruud are almost nil, i personally dont think ruud will be fully fit for the rest of the season. if we lose scholes or giggs before either milan game we could get battered as the replacements coming in are not going to be good enough to over come a quality side

The reason Fergie would like to have won it is to give himself a bit of a grey area over the success/failure label this season. Last season was total failure, and this season is heading that way, but by pointing to a tacky bit oif silverware you can justify yourself to an extent. You need look no further than the extension in time Houllier got with his "five trophies in a year" line.

As it is Fergie has spent a vast sum of money over the last few years, yet has twice lost 25% of the league fixtures, has finished outside the top two on two occasions, has won just one knockout round in Europe over the last five years etc. That record without last seasons FA Cup win would be near impossible to justify to the plc board, many of whom are anything but Fergiephiles.

I can agree with everything you've said Salf over the past two threads, BUT, 25%? You sure? 38/4 is 9.5 games, and we haven't lost 9 games per season, for the last two.

Johnson, I only think people wanted to win it, because we had to beat Chelsea to do so, and then our greater rivals (than Chelsea) Liverpool. Which just rubs salt in their wounds.

We lost nine games in 01/02 and in 03/04. For the record last season it was Fulham,Middlesbrough & Liverpool at home and Southampton, Chelsea, Wolves, City, Portsmouth and Blackburn on the road. In 01/02 we lost at home to Bolton, Chelsea, West Ham, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Arsenal, and lost to Newcastle, Liverpool and Arsenal on the road.

I would be very worried if Fergie throws Ruud in a the deep end against Milan, after all he has played very few games this season.

Jordo, he hasn't played since November, before that he has scored 12...I'd say that was good.

Salf, you mean all English comps I assume then, I thought you meant the league.

ruud will not be fit for the milan game, no chance, i dont think he will play in the first leg. he may have not had the best of seasons domestically but he has still done well in europe, and i would prefer him and rooney up front, if fit than anyone else.

No mate, you were right first time. All those eighteen defeats were league games.
