SVEN: I'M FINISHED
Quote:
SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON has confided to friends and confidantes that he is out as Manchester City manager after just one season.
Eriksson’s 45-minute meeting with City owner Thaksin Shinawatra at the weekend was described as “cordial” and seemed to allay fears.
But, privately, former England coach Eriksson has painted a picture of crisis and financial chaos within the club, and has already told his trusted friends he will be sacked.
One of Eriksson’s associates told me: “Sven pulled out of a big-money transfer today and has explained that everything is on hold at the club, and he meant everything.
“The owner’s money is frozen, and he doesn’t know if he will be around next season.”
Another close friend told me: “Sven does not think he will stay. He’s resigned to going. The owner is unhappy with results, and Sven knows he is on his way.” Shinawatra and a number of associates met Eriksson and chief executive Alistair Mackintosh.
Eriksson spoke at length to the owner for the first time since former Thai prime minister Shinawatra went public on a business trip to Dubai about being “not happy” with the club’s position in the Premier League, confirming he would “evaluate” Eriksson’s position at the end of the season.
Ever since Eriksson has been faced with questions about his future, and although publicly he has said how much he wants to stay and expects to do so, privately it is different.
Any chance of Eriksson lasting a second season evaporated after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at home to Fulham – the first match Shinawatra had attended for a month – when City let a 2-0 lead slip against the relegation battlers.

I dont think Sven should be too bothered if Shinawatra gets rid of him. Despite the end of season drop-off, he has done a pretty good job with City in the last 10 months. Remember this was a side that scored only ten league goals at home last season, and then sold the player who scored half of them. He has managed to secure a double over Manchester Utd, bring in genuinely good players like Elano, Petrov & Corluka (with Bojinov to add to that if he comes back strong), as well as giving a lot of time to a lot of young players (Johnson, Richards, Onuoha, Gelson, Sturridge).
Even Sven's harshest critic I believe would think he was hard done by if he was sacked this summer, and I'm sure he has done his stock no harm at all in the European game. He could walk away with both his reputation, and his bank balance, nicely placed.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has been told he will be sacked as Manchester City manager at the end of the season, BBC Sport understands.
City owner Thaksin Shinawatra told Eriksson he was "not the right man for the job" at a meeting on Sunday, a source close to the manager said.
Eriksson informed the players at training on Monday that he would be dismissed, provoking an angry response.
The Swede, who has two years left on his contract, says he will not resign.
Shinawatra has been unhappy with City's results since the turn of the year.

Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra should reconsider his plans to sack boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, says the League Managers Association.
Eriksson has turned around the club's fortunes but BBC Sport understands Shinawatra still plans to replace the Swede at the end of the season.
"Success for Manchester City is getting into the top 10, Sven has done that," said LMA chief executive Richard Bevan.
"We implore Dr Shinawatra to rethink his strategy and to keep Sven."
Eriksson, who signed a three-year contract when he took over last summer, has guided City to a guaranteed finish of at least ninth.
However, his side have struggled in recent months after an impressive first half to the campaign and, according to a BBC source, was told by Shinawatra on Sunday he was "not the right man for the job".

It makes you wonder about this "crisis" at City, and how many other teams in England are in "crisis" mode.

This is a mental decision, absolutely mental.
I heard Scolari linked with the job, which would be interesting.

Sven won't be too gutted, there's plenty of teams that wouldn't mind having him and he'll get a nice compensation package anyway.
Maybe a return to Italy....

I think the debate over him being a good manager now can be put to rest. I have always rated him as a manager, and I see him back in Italy, since to me, I don't think he has ever left if you know what I mean.

I thought he was a bad appointment to begin with. But i feel sorry for him. He brought it a lot of players and most of them have done well. He's been very unlucky with injuries to key players. I'd let him have one more year personnally.
I wonder who'll replace him. If i was Shinawatra i'd spend every penny to get Mourinho. He'd be ideal for that club.

I think JM's ego wouldn't let him go there.
JM will go to Inter, Milan or Barca.

I think his ego is exactly why he would go there.
If he goes to Inter or Milan, then maybe Mancini or Ancelotti might be headed for City.

Mancini is a very good choice for City. And that rumour was strong before Sven decided to get up and leave.
If you didn't know, Sven is Mancini's mentor in coaching.

Surely that would be a reason for Mancini to not want to go to City then? After how Sven's being treated and all....
Shinawatra has made a big mistake here. Reports are he faces a player revolt, and possibly an exodus, including people like captain Richard Dunne.
He's being urged by the LMA to rethink his decision and Sir Alex Ferguson and Wenger have supported Sven:
Goal.com - Manchester City - Fergie & Wenger Blast Shinawatra
It doesn't look likely that he'll stay though. The thing I find most astonishing though is that at the start of the season Shinawatra and Sven said there were no targets for the first season, they were just going to try and improve and then build on it and set goals next season. Despite overachieving and in all honesty, playing quite good football for large parts, it's apparently not good enough...
