ENCLOSED with my last electricity bill was a very useful little leaflet about how to save energy.

One of its suggestions was to close the curtains once it begins to go dark. I decided to give it a try when I got home on Saturday afternoon. As I allowed the events of the day to wander through my mind, I suddenly remembered having watched a football match.

As I recall, Manchester City were beaten, but understandably so after being reduced to 11 men for half the game. With our proven match-winner sent off, it was always going to be difficult.

Let me talk you through it: Michael Tarnat tucked the ball into his body, while Gary Neville stood nearby.

Always a crowd favourite, Gary then tried to heighten the carnival atmosphere by starting a Mexican wave, raising both arms high into the air so everyone could see them, especially Mr. Winter. What happened next is hard to explain.

Slow motion

All I know is that Gary began to fall. As someone who has fallen down in the street on a number of occasions, I know that it is neither natural nor a good idea.

But down Gary went. Eventually.

There are operas in which a dying fat person hits the deck quicker.

Perhaps Gary has a slow metabolism, which would explain his long struggle to grow a moustache.

Anyway, Gary obviously felt that Michael had done something wrong, but the referee disagreed.

At this, Gary got upset and did something I've seen children in supermarkets do when they can't have any chocolate.

Then when Steve McManaman went over to whisper something to him, probably "I thought it was a penalty", Gary lost his temper.

So the whole game turned. Of course, we were only 1-0 down at the time; we managed to get it to 3-0, but we'd left it too late.
