"It's a bummer. They have said the reason they put these in was to help the player and to benefit the player, and this certainly doesn't benefit the player."
-- Landon Donovan, discussing the new player transfer windows imposed by FIFA on MLS that prevented his loan move to Portsmouth of the English Premier League. (Associated Press)

Landon Donovan to return to Germany
Bayer Eye Donovan Return 14/02/04
Bayer Leverkusen general manager Ilja Kaenzig has revealed that the club intend on calling U.S. star Landon Donovan back to the BayArena next January.
A second loan deal with the San Jose Earthquakes on New Years’ Day 2005 and Bundesliga contenders will expect the attacker in Germany by that date.
"When the time of the (first) loan was over, Landon had the feeling that more time in the USA would be good for him," Kaenzig told new agency SID. "But meanwhile, he became Player of the Year twice and played outstanding in the World Cup.”
"Now, he realized that he's got to make the next step,” announced Kaenzig. “He will play the next season in the USA from April to November and probably start working for us on January 1."

Horrible news for MLS having their poster boy leaving soon. I'm suprised he's willing to go back to Leverkusen after how they treated him.

he signed to long of a contract, now needs to hold up his end of the deal. I think it is right. He has now proven himself and must do it there. It will be good for him but the MLS will miss him.

I do think Landon needs to move on, but I will be surprised if it's Leverkusen. He really does not want to go back there -- some sort of transfer may be worked out.
If he does go back to Leverkusen I will be the first to admit I don't know what the h*** I'm talking about. Well I don't anyway, but I still think he'll end up somewhere else.

If Donovan feels this way why doesn't he say it himself?

Donovan could be sold for 9.1 million dollars
2. PRICE CHECK!: What's the going rate for a 21-year national team attacker whose rights are shared by MLS and a German Bundesliga club?
The price will likely depend on who's buying, and when. MLS would probably get a discount if it chose to buy out Bayer Leverkusen on the remainder of Landon Donovan's contract, with the proviso Leverkusen would receive a sell-on fee if Donovan was eventually sold to another club.
A source at an English Premier League club said an inquiry during the January transfer window regarding a fee for Donovan came back at 5 million pounds ($9.1 million). Considering Brazilian sensation Kaka, 21, went to AC Milan from Sao Paulo last summer for $8.5 million and has scored two goals in the Champions League, that figure seems pretty steep.
The co-sharing arrangement, which was extended last year between MLS and Bayer for Donovan, expires in December. Bayer Leverkusen general manager Ilja Kaenzig has said the team expects him to be back in Germany next January.
For the record, Donovan turns 22 Thursday. He was sent home to rest by the Quakes on Sunday after joining them for a few days at the La Manga Cup. He's been called in for the U.S. game against Haiti
