The Los Angeles Galaxy, which won the 2005 title after reaching the playoffs with the worst record of the eight postseason qualifiers, hasn't let defending champion status influence its regular-season output.

Four days after getting thumped, 4-0, by New England, the Galaxy fell, 1-0, to FC Dallas on Wednesday despite playing with a man advantage for 48 minutes because of a red card to Bobby Rhine.

Carlos Ruiz hit the winner for Dallas, which has won all four of its home games and drew 14,234 for the midweek Pizza Hut Park clash, during which Landon Donovan played his last game for the Galaxy before jetting off to World Cup training camp.

Los Angeles (2-4-1) has managed wins only against Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA and has been outscored 6 to 11. Last season, the Galaxy finished the regular season at .500 and fourth in the Western Conference -- it benefited from having two expansion teams in its conference -- and won the title thanks to a Donovan-inspired run in the postseason.

The title 2005 win, coupled with an Open Cup title, secured the return for 2006 of Coach Steve Sampson, whose regular season record with the Galaxy now stands at 17-20-10.

Last season, a fast start - five wins in its first seven games - helped Los Angeles survive a midsummer run of only one win in 10 games. This season, it’s been a woeful Galaxy from the get-go.
