Exactly. Liverpool looked more unsafe right away when Riise arrived the game. He ain't good enough any longer. Hopefully Rafa will sell him in the summer.

I think Liverpool worked hard, created some good chances and looked getting a decent result until the redhead fucked it up. That could be the goal who sends Chelsea to the final. I think so though.

He better stay come end of the season. Kind of thing that makes supporters go mad when they see a player kissing the badge, then come end of the season leave!

Well he didn't hang himself but he did the next best thing, giving the illusion of penetration, and with the exception of his one shot on goal he passed the ball backwards or to us, a useful outlet for us as much as Liverpool.

Ignoring MUFC and Jlae's fundamentalist sillyness for a moment, I can understand the perspective of Liverpool fans thinking they deserved the win and neutrals not being interested in the game. But I think there are greater depths to this game that aren't being acknowledged.

No, it wasn't a feast of free flowing football, but when you have two teams with three central midfielders of superb quality matching man for man you have an intense battle that isn't condusive to opening any space up. All 6 ran for miles and miles, literally. Without space you cannot play and I think I saw one passing move from Liverpool all game and three from Chelsea in the second half that ended in good saves or good diving blocks.

These games are for purists, not thrill seekers, or people wanting both teams to somehow lose and half their players to get injured (don't deny it Utd fans).

Better wingers for both sides might have made a difference, but not much, because with better wingers logically comes more caution. Anyone else wonder what Joe Cole was thinking with that big first half chance? Bruce Lee wannabe.

From a Chelsea perspective:
Drogba was isolated too much once again, we never seem to learn that whilst he causes all sorts of trouble he'll rarely be enough on his own to bully Liverpool into major mistakes. The same might be said of Torres, but Liverpool don't have an Anelka wasting away on the bench and wasn't it him waiting for that cross if Riise hadn't so beautifully finished it off himself?!

If Liverpool had won I couldn't complain too strongly, but it wasn't a reflection of Liverpool being the better side on the night, just making fewer mistakes and taking their chance(s). Whilst they had more possession, they rarely managed to sustain pressure in Chelsea's half, something Chelsea were more capable of thanks to Drogba and clever support play from Lampard (who actually had one of his worse days despite some lovely touches).

Essien coming back (in current form) might make a difference to the midfield battle for the second leg, even if he plays wide right, just tipping the balance in our favour and allowing our counter attacks more potency.

Liverpool seemed much cooler, with Riise the aberration, in both penalty areas. In these games they always have cold blood and we have boiling blood....I don't know why.

NJ:
I thought Gerrard and Alonso both had much better games than usual against us, no inch was given and when they did have space they used it well. I don't think Gerrard can be blamed for staying forward too much, it was what he was told to do and it didn't exactly cost you anything. He managed to open our defence up twice with his passing, just like Lampard did with Liverpool.

another really nice post mr. hanuma... cant disagree with much there except to clarify my position as a viewer of football. i am not a thrill-seeker, i tend to be more of a purist... one who values quality wingers and inspired attacking play, neither of which happened in this match. just wanted to clarify that.

Firstly thanks.

Secondly, no offence, but this (quality wingers and inspired attacking play) is often the icing on the cake, by itself it can lack substance.

Perhaps you'd be better off describing yourself as a connoisseur of footballing confectionery, but then again, you don't want to look gay...

Forget Liverpool's 12th man, we had the 12th man yesterday.

Frank Lampard could be set to miss the second leg of Chelsea's Champions League semi-final against Liverpool following the death of his mother.

Rafa Benitez accuses Didier Drogba of diving

Quote:
The Spaniard voices anger at the antics of Chelsea’s striker and hopes it won’t happen again on Wednesday.

RAFAEL BENITEZ has added extra spice to the midweek game between Liverpool and Chelsea by suggesting Didier Drogba is a diver. Ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday, Benitez called for a strong referee to be appointed to curb the antics of the striker.

The Liverpool manager was furious about Drogba’s behaviour in the first leg at Anfield on Tuesday and said he was “really disappointed” at the sympathetic view taken of Drogba’s regular falls by referee Konrad Plautz.

“He is amazing because he is massive (and yet goes down). It is very impressive,” Benitez said caustically. “With Drogba it is important to have a good referee. You can’t do anything (to stop him going down) but I will say it because it was so clear.

“Drogba was given seven fouls and Fernando Torres three. Torres has bruises all around the body. So from the first minute I was disappointed by the referee.”

Uefa do not reveal the identity of referees for Champions League matches until 48 hours before they are played, but Benitez said he hoped an official for the game at Stamford Bridge will be from a European country with a big league, unlike Austrian Plautz.

He felt Plautz’s willingness to keep blowing for free kicks whenever Drogba hit the turf contributed to the five minutes of stoppage time during which Chelsea scored their crucial away goal in the 1-1 draw.

Benitez is so vexed by Drogba that he revealed he possesses a “lowlights” video, featuring what he feels are instances of the striker play-acting dating going back several seasons. “I have a lot of clips about him,” the Spaniard said. “We played against Chelsea 19 times since I came to Liverpool and every time I have collected clips. I have shown them to some of the players. I think that (Martin) Skrtel and Carra (Jamie Carragher) were really good against him.”

Benitez’s remarks are sure to deepen the antipathy between Chelsea and Liverpool since he took charge in 2004, his arrival coinciding with Jose Mourinho’s at Stamford Bridge. They had a testy relationship, but with Mourinho gone the build-up to the teams’ past three meetings was free of controversy. John Terry, the Chelsea captain, has fanned the flames, though, by using his programme notes yesterday to accuse Liverpool supporters of “disgusting” chants at Anfield.

Drogba has bruises too, he just makes more of them.

If he didn't we'd never get a lot of deserved fouls, simple as that. It's sometimes frustrating, but what's more frustrating is him getting kicked and us not getting a freekick.

And I'm sure I don't need to get out the Gerrard-diving video do I?

Is it just me or is Steven Gerrard being a tad gobby leading up to this game.

If Liverpool knew our weaknesses so well why haven't they exploited them before? Last time I checked it was penalties, ghost goals and a string of calamitous errors that have done for us.
