Clattenburg has never been among the best referees in the Premiership.

Can anyone who saw the game on Tv clear this up for me becasue alot of people have said this but it was at the other end of the pitch to where I was. Did Clettenburg bring out a yellow card for Hibbert and change it after Gerrard protested?
And what was the penalty call like for Everton after Liverpool's 2nd?
Anything said on sky about Kuyts 2 footed flying kick and Carragher having Lescott in a headlock when he had a goalscorring oppertunity? And Carragher screaming at the referee before he was about to book Gerrard, and then not booking him afterwards.

Lescott, Stubbs, Osman, Arteta and Anichebe were the only players who looked interested.
Gerrard and Hibbert were both holding each other's shirts. Gerrard just 'happened' to fall over the second they got into the penalty area.

Clattenburg awarded a penalty, pulled out a yellow - cue Gerrard - yellow card disappears and out comes the red.

Everton should have had two penalties and Kuyt could well have seen red, although for me a yellow was the right decision there.

The most important thing: Liverpool won the derby. They really needed the 3 points after several point drops this season.

Toffees pay the penalty

Quote:
Dirk Kuyt's last-gasp penalty gave Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 win over nine-man Everton at Goodison Park.

Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville both saw red for Everton as Liverpool came from behind to take all three points courtesy of two penalties from Kuyt.

Everton were gifted the lead in the first half as Sami Hyypia put through his own goal with a bizarre strike.

Liverpool drew level on 54 minutes when Kuyt scored from the spot after Hibbert was sent off for hauling down Steven Gerrard inside the box.

The game looked set to end all-square until Neville stopped Lucas Levia's shot on the line and the England international was sent off for the offence.

Kuyt kept his cool from the spot to score to get Liverpool back to winning ways in dramatic circumstances.

Problems

Liverpool had the early edge. Gerrard almost got on the end of a cross-field ball, dropping over Hibbert's head on the Everton right.

Liverpool exploited that same space on five minutes, when Yossi Benayoun broke down the flank and set up Andrei Voronin for a snap shot that Tim Howard half stopped before clutching the ball away from Kuyt.

But when Everton got their set-plays working, they caused problems. A couple of free-kicks and a corner were not cleared well and from one cross back in from Leon Osman, Alan Stubbs saw a header drop wide of a post.

Corners and free-kicks, swirling into the near post, were a constant source of danger as Victor Anichebe saw one header flash wide.

The Reds did hit back a minute later when John Arne Riise's 25-yard free-kick was deflected just wide.

But Everton's aerial threat was soon to produce a goal on 38 minutes. A Mikel Arteta corner was half-cleared, Stubbs turning to hook it back into the danger area before the ball eventually cannoned off Hyypia's boot high into the net for an own goal.

Lifeline

After the break Joleon Lescott, fresh from his England debut, was a threat on the left along with Arteta before Liverpool gained a lifeline on 53 minutes.

Gerrard set off down the left channel, stretching into Everton's half with Hibbert in pursuit.

The full-back was always a yard behind and when the pair reached the box the defender clipped Gerrard and referee Mark Clattenburg instantly awarded a penalty.

The official showed Hibbert the red card before Kuyt stepped up to drill home the spot-kick.

Everton could have had a penalty themselves when Steve Finnan manhandled Lescott in the box soon after, ahead of a Kuyt break that set up Riise for a shot over the bar.

Howard blocked a Voronin shot and Kuyt headed the rebound over the top, but Everton were still coming forward.

Surprised

Kuyt was booked for a flying lunge at Neville, and Yakubu saw a 30-yard shot go wide.

Benitez then took a very brave decision on 71 minutes to replace Gerrard with young Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva.

The Liverpool skipper looked surprised, but trotted off to allow Lucas into central midfield, with the substitute quickly supplying a pass for Voronin, who scuffed his shot wide.

Neville was then sent off on 89 minutes for handling a Lucas shot on the line, providing Kuyt with his second penalty.

Everton finished the game complaining to Clattenburg that they should have had a last-ditch penalty for Carragher pulling down Lescott.

He refused their claim and the official was booed off after being surrounded by home players.

Who says England doesn't have any decent goalkeepers?

Phil Neville should replace Robinson against Croatia! What a great reaction save!

The first penalty might have been outside of the box, but when you are running at top speed it only takes a slight touch to fall over...

What was more surprising was that Beintez took Gerrard off instead of Sissoko, wtf?

Sissoko showed again, like against Marseille that the ball is a hot potato for him! I honestly can't imagine how someone can become a professional footballer with less skills than a goalkeeper...

and it takes even less if you are going to wait until you reach the penalty area before chucking yourself to the ground.

Those who think Gerrard dived on that penalty kick should eat their words. Gerrard always dives because he plays for Liverpool and you are all jealous. Gerrard is out of form and still you cries not having him on the team.

Carra has told it was NOT a penalty kick so I was wrong. It was a fair duel but I understand those who means it was a penalty kick. That could have given Everton one point...

Just watched through the match on Sky Plus, second half was one of the best contested derbies in recent years i thought. That was down to the tension and the ineptitude of both sides at times. Some of the players on that pitch were simply atrocious- Sissoko was appalling, Yakubu was a joke.

First half i felt that if we'd have got the first goal then we'd have won comfortably, Voronin missed a really good chance and Gerrard took a bad touch when he was in a good position. But then Everton started hammering us down our right hand side through Lescott, and in all honesty the goal was coming- shame for Sami cos i thought he had a good game.

Course the game turned on the penalty incident, i think Hibbert was stupid in what he did. There's no doubt Gerrard had the run on him but it was no certainty that he would score, Hibbert definitely pulled him back, he didnt need to, and he can have no complaints with the red card imo. Not too sure what to make of the yellow card/red card bit, we've seen referees do things like that before (eg Essien at Anfield earlier this season) and until we hear from Clattenburg why he did it its hard to comment. Gerrard had obviously said that he was in a goalscoring position, and having given the penalty I think it had to be a red card.

Kuyt was very rash and very lucky to stay on. I can sort of understand what he was doing, expecting the ball to be cleared high and trying to charge it down, but travelling at that pace it was a damn dangerous thing to do and he was lucky to get away with it, and i guess lucky that people know he isnt a dirty player (if that had been Joey Barton or someone i think it might have been red). Personally i dont think Finnan on Lescott is a penalty, if they are being given then there would be ten/fifteen penalties a game i'm afraid, and Lescott was being very smart by backing in.

Performance wise second half we created a fair few chances, Sissoko & Voronin missed a few, Kuyt headed a sitter over the bar and had one blocked on its way in. I was a bit gutted for Lucas that he never got the winner cos of Steptoe's fine reflex save, but credit Kuyt for his balls and his composure (esp to put it in the same corner), Howard prob should have saved it as well. i was still going mental when they had their second penalty shout, at the time i thought it was typical last minute Goodison appealing for anything, but having seen the replay they can feel very unlucky and Carragher's stupidity went unpunished luckily for him and us.

All in all, a derby with a million talking points, havent had one of them since the Gary Mac derby. Big big win for us. At half time i was distraught, the season looked to be slipping away, but we won- lucky or not- and hopefully this can kick start the league campaign.

Man of the match had to be Mascherano as well, immense that lad is.

I'd take NJ10's words ahead of yours on pretty much anything tbh, at least he can admit it was a pretty strong shout.

It doesn't take an idiot to figure out it was a pretty strong penalty appeal just from watching the incidents.
