Gerrard scored an excellent free kick but I'm disappointed with the ref's decision. That wasn't a foul. Torres has looked great despite not getting a goal. His pace and intelligence is obviously going to be a threat to any squad this season.

You could say the same for Gerrards freekick, it shouldnt have been a FK in the first place.
Anyway, luckypool as usual.

Fucking lovely stuff. First opening day win for 5 years, which strangely was at Villa Park too.
I thought the spine of our team was excellent, Carra and Agger were almost faultless until Carra made a rare gaffe near the end, it would have been cruel if that had cost us the points. Gerrard looked immense in the middle alongside the steady and reliable Alonso, thats the best ive seen Stevie play in a long time. Purposeful, strong, committed, a goal threat and at the heart of everything good. What a free kick to cap it off. It probably wasnt a free kick, Petrov got his foot to the ball, but there can be 100 free kicks given like that, not all of them will lead to a stunning goal. Then there was Nando & Dirk up front, Torres was tidy, looked dangerous and seemed to fit in nicely, Kuyt took up some good positions but his control was poor at times, still he laid two excellent chances for Gerrard & Babel (who did well when he came on), and brought the first goal with his persistence. It was a good performance, definitely not negative, and we deserved the points.
Villa were very poor i thought. Gardner had a very good game at full back, and Taylor was superb. Apart from that i thought they were poor. Didnt really offer much going forward, although Young threatened in fits and starts, and the midfield was pretty much outplayed.
Good start, we needed that.

Not all handballs is necessary a free kick or a penalty kick.It depends on your intention or if you stop the ball on a clearly shot on goal.Carra's was neither.The penalty kick was not more obvious than Gerrard got the free kick he scored on.A brilliant goal by the way. |

Carragher moved his arm in the way of the ball, the ball was going past him and he lifted his arm, that's a definite penalty...

It was a penalty. A soft one, but a penalty.
Luckily Gerrard was able to pull a rabbit out of the hat a few minutes later and we got the result we deserved.
