Benitez confirms Torres bid

Quote:
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed the club are interested in Spain striker Fernando Torres and revealed he is close to making some new signings.

Despite having funds available from new owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, Liverpool have failed to make any significant additions to their squad so far this summer.

However, in recent days there has been increasing speculation of a £27million move for Torres and now Benitez has confirmed the Atletico Madrid man is a target.

Some reports in Spain has told Manchester City has outbid Liverpool for Torres...Those claims have not been confirmed by City...It seems Eriksson want to sign all Liverpool targets...He's also keen on Benyaoun.

Looks like this deal is wrapped up. I think we've been majorly ripped off, but if its not gonna bankrupt us, and we still have a bit of money to buy a couple of defenders and a winger then fine. Torres is an improvement on Kuyt, Bellamy & Crouch, he aint a world class striker imo but he's young and has a big reputation in Europe. Lets hope he settles quickly (if/when this deal is finalised) and adapts to the English game. One things for sure, he will be an automatic starter at that price.

Be sad to see Garcia go, if Atletico come back for him, but we had 2 very productive seasons out of him, some wonderful memories and important goals, and it looks like we will recoup most of what we paid for him, which isnt bad for a 29 year old.

I don't think so, Imo prices have become inflated, but when Bent costs 16.5 then people would assume that players better than him would be in the 20's. The prices are just getting ridicoulously high.

[EDIT:] However gd he maybe the price should not be higher than 25 mill (at most) and that should go for any player unless he is amazing

Xabi Alonso is excited at the prospect of the 'brilliant' Fernando Torres linking up with him at Liverpool.

Liverpool are widely believed to be on the verge of clinching a club record deal for the Atletico Madrid hit-man.

Atletico are thought to have accepted an offer for Torres with Luis Garcia going in the opposite direction as a sweetener.

Reports have suggested Torres has cut short his holiday to travel to Merseyside to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Liverpool on Tuesday.

Alonso has welcomed Liverpool's move for his fellow Spaniard and he believes he will be a major success in England if he does complete his switch to Anfield.

"It would be fantastic if Torres is bought by Liverpool because he is a brilliant player," Alonso told Marca.

"We are going to see what happens in the end, but it is clear that it would be good for us to have him.

"He has already demonstrated his enormous quality and to have him in the team would be brilliant."

Liverpool are expected to announce Fernando Torres as their £26.5million record signing tomorrow after he passed a medical.

The Spanish international was on Merseyside today and passed the medical before flying back to Madrid, where he will hold a media conference to say his goodbye to Atletico fans in the morning.
The 23-year-old will then return to Liverpool where he will be unveiled as boss Rafael Benitez's prized summer capture.

Torres has cut short his holiday to complete the deal, which will see him sign a six-year contract worth £90,000 a week.

The arrival of Torres will probably trigger the sale of one of Liverpool's strikers, although it is not going to be Peter Crouch, despite interest from Manchester City.

Benitez has already sold Luis Garcia to Atletico Madrid for £4million, a deal confirmed today by both clubs, and will also want to sort out the future of Djibril Cisse who is a £6million target of Marseille, where he has been on loan for a season.

The other departure is set to be Craig Bellamy, with West Ham or Manchester City his likely destination.

Crouch's future has become a point of interest with Manchester City's likely new boss Sven-Goran Eriksson seemingly keen to sign the lanky striker.

Eriksson is on the brink of being confirmed as City's boss this week, with new owner Thaksin Shinawatra on the point of purchasing the 75% of shares he needs to de-list the club from the Stock Exchange. Only then will he confirm Eriksson as manager.

But claims that Crouch is concerned over his contract, with two years left to run, have been denied by Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

The England striker's Anfield future was cast in doubt at the weekend when it was reported he was the only Liverpool player with two years remaining on his contract who has not been invited to open talks about a new deal.

Parry said: "It is not true that he is the only player not to have been approached about a new deal and he is very much part of Rafa Benitez's future plans."

But with Torres now joining Crouch, Dirk Kuyt, Andriy Voronin and Bellamy on Liverpool's striking list, one forward is likely to make way and Bellamy is the favourite.

Benitez needs the funds from such transfers to help finance the massive outlay for Torres, and Luis Garcia was also sacrificed.

The midfielder was unveiled in Madrid today and said: "It was a difficult decision because it hurts to be leaving one of the most important clubs in the world, and a club with one of the best sets of fans.

"I have enjoyed three great years there. There are several different reasons and the decision took a lot of thought, but Liverpool will always be with me because they always treated me very well.

"I have been lucky to win things there, but I did not want to let the opportunity pass to win trophies in Spain."

The likelihood of Gabriel Heinze joining Torres at Anfield seems to have receded.

It is believed that Manchester United would not be happy selling the Argentinean full-back to one of their biggest rivals.

There have been no direct transfers between the clubs since 1964 when Phil Chisnall moved from United to Liverpool.

Heinze, currently playing for his country in the Copa America, and his advisors are believed to be interested but that will not impress his Old Trafford employers.

My Football News Link - Liverpool set to unveil £26.5m Torres after striker passes medical

its looking increasingly likely torres is going to liverpool, damn i was hoping for a last minute hiccupp.

and thankfully the heinze to liverpool talk seems to be dying down,i dont think fans from either team would of been comfortable with the idea.

FERNANDO TORRES: PROFILE

Quote:
Liverpool's pursuit of Fernando Torres will land them one of the most highly-rated young forwards in the world.

The 23-year-old has made a phenomenal impact at Atletico Madrid since bursting on to the scene at the age of 17.

Torres’ goals quickly earned him the nickname ‘El Nino de Oro’ - the golden boy - and the team’s captaincy.

He has proved one of the most consistent scorers in the Primera Liga and he shone on the international stage last year with three goals for Spain at the World Cup.

It was only a matter of time before some of Europe’s bigger clubs came asking about him and he has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and AC Milan in the past.

As protests in the Spanish capital have shown, Atletico fans have grown hugely attached to the youngster and parting with him will prove painful.

Torres grew up in the Fuenlabrada area near the city – traditionally Real Madrid country – but was taken under Atletico’s wing as a child and first played for them at the age of 11.

He became Atletico’s youngest player when he made his first team debut in May 2001 and has been scoring goals regularly since.

On the international front, he was top scorer as Spain won the 2001 European Under-16 Championship and again as they repeated the feat in the Under-19 equivalent a year later.

His first full season in the Spanish top flight was 2002/03, after Atletico won promotion, and he adjusted well to the higher level as he scored 13 goals. He has been their leading goalscorer every season since.

Atletico soon realised they had a star on their hands and they have warned other clubs off him with a £27million valuation for some time.

But, after 75 goals in the past five seasons, and with a contract due to expire in 2009, the clamour for his services from elsewhere has become too strong to hold off.

The deal is done and it will be official today.

The transfer deal could look like this:

£20.2 + Garcia (£4M)

or

£21.5 + Garcia (£5M), £26.5M as Liverpool Post has announced.

There is some speculation Athletico could have told the media the wrong fee (£26.5M) to calm down Athletico fans.
