Torres: I Still Have A Lot To Learn

Quote:
Despite making a stunning start to his Liverpool career with a brilliant goal against Chelsea, Fernando Torres insists he still has a lot to learn about playing in English football.

Torres is already a darling of the Kop after netting in the 16th minute of Sunday's showdown with Jose Mourinho's men as he made a first repayment on the record transfer fee the Reds splashed out in the summer.

Despite feeling a sense of satisfaction after opening his scoring account at Anfield, the 23-year-old is adamant he still has work to do before he is fully adapted to life in the Barclays Premier League.

"Everything is different in England and I have to get used to that," said the Spaniard.

"The way the fans live the game and sing throughout to create an atmosphere is different. Before the game, everyone sings as well. It is not the same as it is in Spain.

"The English game is more physical, too, but it's nice. It's end to end, it flows more and it doesn't stop so often. For the fans and for the players, that's great.

"Manchester United and Chelsea are the strongest teams, but every game is intense. You have to adapt your game according to your opponents.

"There is a lot of expectation among the fans because of the fee, but all I can do is work and score goals like I did against Chelsea.

"Scoring helps with your adaptation, but I don't feel any pressure, so the goal did not come as a relief."

He's been 'learning' first team football his entire career. Years and years and not a single change in his play.

We'll see, he still has a lot to prove in this league.

For me he's not done nearly enough off the ball in the games I've seen for Liverpool. Fine in linking up when he gets the ball, but the movement leaves a lot to be desired.

And obviously his finishing has been laughably inconsistent, as we knew it would be.

TORRES LOVING LIFE AT THE KOP

Quote:
Fernando Torres has admitted he is loving life at Liverpool and wants to win as many trophies as possible with the Reds.

The record signing, who scored his first goals in front of the Kop in the 6-0 mauling of Derby County, said he has been made to feel very welcome by everyone at Anfield.

"I am learning quickly and my teammates have played an important role, along with everyone at the club who have all gone out of their way to help me," commented Torres.

"I feel as if I have been at Liverpool for a long time. I intend to stay here for many years to come and I am really pleased with everything - my new teammates, the fans, the city, the stadium and, of course with my first goal at Anfield versus Chelsea.

"The experience is more fulfilling when things work out and if we can maintain our recent form, I am sure that everything will continue to move along nicely."

Has had a good start, not more.

He has been able to grab a few goals and the goal against Chelsea was real quality. However against Sunderland and Derby he showed why I'm still not totally convinced he will be a revelation. If he ups his goal to chance rate then he will be a very very valuable asset and he seems to link up well with Kuyt and Voronin.

TORRES LOVING RAFA'S REGIME

Quote:
Fernando Torres has revealed how a personalised training programme designed by Rafa Benitez is helping him take the Barclays Premier League by storm.

The Spaniard has been delighted with the start he's made to life in England, something he puts down in no small part to the regime at Melwood.

He explained: "Depending on his position outfield, each player has his own personalised training programme.

"The type of training also depends on the strengths and weaknesses of your next rival. We all practise movements you might need to use in your position during the course of a game.

"If you have worked on specific moves 15 or 20 times, and you then use them out on the pitch, then you are more likely to improve."

Torres, who arrived from Atletico Madrid for a record fee in July, also revealed how he's relishing Liverpool's style of football.

"At Atletico I was more involved in the middle of the park and I had to drop deep to look for the ball before even thinking of attacking the rival's box," said the 23-year-old.

"At Liverpool we have players in the middle of the park who take care of that job, because here each player has a defined role within the team.

"Maybe that is one of the reasons why playing football in England benefits my game. We play a more direct football, it is also quick with plenty of counter-attacks and you also have extra support from people making late runs.

"I feel liberated and am enjoying myself like when I first arrived at Atletico. I did not expect to receive so much help with settling in.

"Everything is working out fine, though I am still quite a way off from completely settling in. We are finding our feet; looking for a house, for a car - though the goals and victories make everything a lot easier."

Fernando Torres sends out a clear message

Quote:
The message to Rafa Benitez from Fernando Torres was crystal clear: I need to be playing football, not sitting on the bench.

It followed a man of the match performance at Reading in which the Spanish striker scored a hat-trick in the 4-2 win.

And, quite frankly, on the evidence of what we have seen of Torres so far this season, I only hope the Liverpool boss takes the message on board and plays him regularly from now on.

His wasn’t just a performance about goals, although he took each one with brilliant composure. It was about pace, strength, the ability to be a constant menace, technique, skill and the confidence of a striker who simply wants – and needs – to be out there leading the Reds line in every game.

We know that won’t happen, but we also know that the Reds cannot afford the loss of two points to the likes of Birmingham City in the Premiership, either.

Torres didn’t allow the Reading defence to relax for the 90 minutes. Despite some crude tackling, a total lack of protection from a referee who was embarrassing, and the fact he should have won a penalty which was blatant as any I have seen, it was a complete performance from a complete player.

Torres is not just a goalscorer insists Jamie Carragher

Quote:
Jamie Carragher hailed hat-trick hero Fernando Torres after the 4-2 victory over Reading sent the Reds into the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

Torres was left on the bench for the Reds’ last two Premier League games but demonstrated the finishing ability that saw manager Rafael Benitez spend £18million on him in the summer.

“He won us the game,” Carragher said. “It was a tight game, a very difficult game but he made the difference.

“Some great finishes but it’s not just his goals, it’s his all round work for the team.”

As for whether Torres would be handed a more regular first-team place, Carragher added: “That’s up to the manager. All he can do is do his own job and he’s made a great start at the club. He’s a real team player.”

Carragher revealed he thoroughly enjoyed playing in the entertaining tie.

“It was a good game to play in. It was a typical cup tie,” he said.

“Reading gave their all.”

As for Liverpool’s current form and prospects of winning the Carling Cup, Carragher said: “We’ve had three draws, still unbeaten so that’s not too bad.

“I’m just delighted to be in the next round. We want to do as well as we can in all the competitions.”

Torres happy to be a hat-trick hero

Quote:
Fernando Torres today reflected on his first hat-trick in a Liverpool shirt and declared: "I hope there will be plenty more to come."

The Spanish striker was the star of the show as the Reds came out on top in a six goal thriller at the Madejski Stadium to secure their place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

After being rested for the weekend clash with Birmingham the club's record signing made an immediate impact on his return, netting three times within 36 second half minutes to kill off the challenge of Steve Coppell's men.

"I am really happy and I hope that there will be plenty more goals to come," he told his official website. "My aim is to help my team to do well in all competitions. What I achieved against Reading was special, but it was a team effort and the most important thing is that we are now in the next round of the Cup.

"At the start of the game I could never have imagined that I would score three goals. It was a tough match, with strong marking, but the key to our victory was finding open spaces, and also the quality of the final ball from Leto, Riise and Gerrard.

"If I had to choose a favourite, it would be my second goal of the night, I think that it was the best of the three. For my first goal, I managed to get in front of the defender before sliding the ball across the keeper into the far corner. Riise picked me out in the box for my second, and the credit for the third goal should go to Gerrard, who put me clean through with only the keeper to beat."

And Torres is now hoping the victory over Reading will act as a confidence booster for the squad after three consecutive draws.

"We all realise that we have let slip some points in our last two games and that we cannot continue to do this if we want to be in the fight for the title," he added.
