Agent confirms Nelson interest

Nelson's agent has confirmed that two clubs, one English and one Spanish, are keen on the Benfica right-back who has reportedly attracted interest from Liverpool.

The right-back has been vastly impressive for his Portuguese employers so far this season and his performances in the SuperLiga and UEFA Champions League have seen him earn a first call-up to Luiz Felipe Scolari's international squad.

Nelson's displays against Celtic this season and Manchester United last term have also drawn interest from Europe's biggest leagues, with Rafa Benitez reputed to be his most persistent fan amongst a clutch of English admirers.

The Reds boss is searching for another right-back to challenge Steve Finnan after seeing Jan Kromkamp leave Anfield over the summer, and has reportedly included Nelson on a shortlist that also contains the names of Blackburn's Lucas Neill and Sevilla's Daniel Alves.

Benfica are believed to be demanding around €25 million (£17 million) for the player whose contract runs out in 2010, and his agent Ulisses Santos has revealed that there are currently two clubs interested in his client.

Liverpool are understood to be one, with the other an unnamed party from La Liga, and Santos believes the two sides will be keen to enter into talks at the end of the current campaign.

"Two clubs are interested but the subject is down to Benfica," said Santos.

"Now these clubs have decided to follow the work of Nelson and to speak at the end of the season."

Valencia consider Reina swoop

Valencia are closely monitoring Jose Reina's situation at Liverpool, according to reports in Spain.

The UEFA Champions League hopefuls are believed to be scouring the transfer market for a new keeper as Santiago Canizares is still to sign a new contract.

Reina has attracted criticism for his performances this season, particularly during the Merseyside derby defeat to Everton, but would not come cheaply even if Rafa Benitez did think about selling his fellow Spaniard.

After joining from Villarreal in 2005, 'Pepe' has made the number one jersey at Anfield his own, seeing off the challenge of Champions League final hero Jerzy Dudek.

Mestalla sports director Amedeo Carboni is said to be contemplating the merits of making a move for the 24-year-old.

Reina, meanwhile, has written off Liverpool's title chances after the defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

"Fourth place is our target now," he stated.

"We have to fight for that.

"The championship is probably too far away for us because, mathematically, [Manchester] United and Chelsea are so superior.

"We have got to start showing more character."

I would have nothing against Reina ruled out from Anfield and head back to Spain.I think that's the place where he belongs.But I doubt Benitez will get rid of him.

We all know what happened last year when our teams faced eachother.

I think Simao is a great player, but i think 14 million is more of what he is worth, now Nelson is is not even 21 yet....so i would not let him go for less than 20 Million.

I think Benfica want to keep their most valuable players and that's why they set such a high tag on them.They have no need to sell them it seems.Good for them.

We are now the club with most amount of paying members worldwide. We are in the guinness, so we have made some revenew that way, but the club policy is only two sell one player a year...from the core of players that are untouchable. It has to be a very good offer.

For this year we loan/sold Manuel Fernandes to Portsmouth.

they are trying to keep the team together and hold on to the talent they have. Sometimes its hard, but they have done well so far.

Craig Bellamy scored for Wales in their 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.He also set up the fourth goal scored by Llewellyn.Bellamy was given the captain's armband for the second half.

He become 'Man of the match'.

Good for him and his self esteem which have been absent in the Liverpool shirt.

Rafa: Kewell has strength to return

Rafael Benitez believes Harry Kewell has the mental strength to resurrect his Anfield career in the New Year.
The Australian international is currently recovering from his latest injury setback and hasn't played for the Reds since last season's FA Cup final.

Despite still facing many weeks on the sidelines, Benitez is adamant his 28 year old midfielder still has a future at Anfield.

He said: "Harry still has a future here and I'm positive he can come back. He is now working with the physios but he will need at least two months before he can start training with the team again.

"He is okay mentally. He knew he had an injury problem, but now he is mentally in a right way.

"He had two or three things wrong with him, but it was his toe which was causing the major problem. We think the injury has been sorted, so when he returns to training it will just be a question of getting him match fit.

"If we have Harry Kewell and Momo Sissoko coming back in January, then it will be like signing two new players."

Liverpool star refusing to rule out £6million transfer

The Mestalla Stadium side are said to be lining up a £6million move for the former Villarreal goalkeeper at the end of the season, as they see him as the perfect long-term replacement for Santiago Canizares.

And although the 24-year-old insists he is settled on Merseyside, he admits he is flattered by the interest from La Liga side and is refusing to rule out the possibility of a transfer.

"The interest of Valencia is flattering to me, although at this moment I want to be focused at helping Liverpool return to our best form, which is most important,” Reina told AS. “We'll see what happens in the future."

International Reds round-up

Seven Liverpool players were in action for their respective countries last night, with only one tasting defeat.
Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard took part in England's friendly against Holland, which ended 1-1.

Kuyt lasted 61 minutes, running tirelessly without getting a sniff at goal. Gerrard could, and perhaps should, have netted twice.

The Liverpool skipper found himself one-on-one with Henk Timmer in the first-half but the Dutch stopper saved with his legs. Gerrard was again denied after the break following a trademark burst through the box.

Peter Crouch and Jamie Carragher warmed the bench throughout.

Centre-back Daniel Agger played 90 minutes as the Danes drew 1-1 in a friendly against the Czech Republic, with former Red Milan Baros finding the net for the Czechs.

John Arne Riise played a full part in Norway's 1-1 draw in Serbia, while Xabi Alonso featured in the first half of Spain's defeat away to Romania.

Meanwhile, several Reds were involved in European Championship qualifiers.

Steve Finnan played a full 90 minutes as the Republic of Ireland recorded their first win of the campaign. Steve Staunton's side beat San Marino 5-0 thanks to a Robbie Keane hat-trick.

Finnish player of the year Sami Hyypia also lasted the distance in the Scandinavian side's 1-0 victory at home to Armenia. The result leaves Finland top of Group A.

Sissoko operation success for Liverpool

Liverpool have confirmed Mohamed Sissoko’s operation has been a success.

The Mali international sustained a shoulder injury during the recent Carling Cup win at Birmingham City and is expected to be out for some time, yet manager Rafael Benitez has revealed the player underwent a successful operation.

"The doctors said it was very successful, but now we must wait. We know we will be without Momo for some time, but maybe we'll know more in a few days exactly how long it will be,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

With Sissoko out of action, Steven Gerrard is now finally set to be given a central role alongside Xabi Alonso, even though he remained on the right for the defeat at Arsenal last weekend.
