Liverpool are poised to sign Blackburn's Australian defender Lucas Neill after making a £2m bid.
The 28-year-old will be on his way to Anfield before the transfer window closes after turning down a lucrative new contract at Ewood Park.
Neill was a star of Australia's World Cup campaign and has only one year remaining on his current deal.
If, as expected, the deal goes through, Blackburn are ready to move for Manchester City's Danny Mills.
Neill was sent off in Blackburn's opening day defeat at Portsmouth.
The player's agent Peter Harrison said recently: "They have made an offer which Lucas has declined - he is not going to be signing a new contract at Blackburn.
"He has enjoyed his time there, he loves the club and the fans, he just feels it is time for a change."

Yeah, he become much hated after breaking Carragher's leg.I'm not happy with this probably signing. His style of play it's to hard IMO.To many yellow and red cards destroys any teams moral.I will never trust in Neill if he will be playing for Liverpool like I didn't in Xavier when he arrived to the club.

Neil Mellor has today signed a three year deal with Championship outfit Preston North End.
Mellor is now fit again after being plagued by injury problems over recent months but with Craig Bellamy, Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch and Robbie Fowler ahead of him in the pecking order at Anfield, first team opportunities were clearly going to be limited for the 23 year old this season.
Despite not playing as much football as he would have liked during his time at Anfield, Mellor will never be forgotten by the Liverpool fans after netting one of the three 'comeback' goals against Olympiacos and sending Arsenal crashing to defeat with a memorable last minute strike in the Premiership at Anfield.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle has signed a one-year loan deal with Recreativo de Huelva.
The 21-year-old has struggled to convince Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez of his ability since the Spaniard took over from Gerard Houllier at Anfield.
He became a peripheral figure last season and was loaned out to Blackburn for the tail end of the campaign.
Sinama-Pongolle had been strongly linked with a move to Osasuna this summer, while Lyon were also reported to be interested, but he has instead opted for newly-promoted Liga side Recreativo.
The forward will spend the entire season at the Estadio Nuevo Colombino but the terms of the agreement contain no option of a permanent deal, meaning he will return to Liverpool next summer.
Liverpool midfielder Salif Diao has also been tipped to seal a move to Recreativo before the transfer window shuts.
The Senegal international is well down the pecking order at Anfield and is expected to be loaned out to keep him playing more regularly.
Benitez is also reportedly weighing up what to do to do with defender Jan Kromkamp, with PSV Eindhoven in the running to snap him up

Neill is a good signing, can play anywhere across the back and as a holding midfielder.

Harry Kewell's agent has played down reports the Australian could be in line for a move to Tottenham.
The former Leeds United winger has been linked with a move to the White Hart Lane outfit, who are keen to bolster their numbers.
Spurs have already bid for Middlesbrough's England international Stewart Downing, however, their offer falls well short of the North East outfit's valuation.
Another name is the frame is Lyon's Hatem Ben Arfa, who is being tipped for the top by the French champions.
However, it seems a move for Kewell is a non-starter with Kewell's agent Bernie Mandic saying it is pure speculation.
"There has never been a single word from anyone at Liverpool about Harry leaving," Mandic told The Independent.

Liverpool must cough up £4 million today to land Blackburn Rovers defender Lucas Neill.

The Sun says the Reds must double their original £2 million offer if they hope to seal a deadline-beating swoop for the Australian.
Neill, 28, earned himself notoriety among Anfield fans for a controversial tackle on Jamie Carragher in 2003, which broke the England defender's leg.
It sparked a huge row between then managers Graeme Souness and Gerard Houllier.
But there is no problem between the players and Neill's arrival would not cause any friction.
However, Rovers have dug their heels in and are refusing to consider Liverpool's £2million bid.
Boss Mark Hughes is keen on Reds left-back Stephen Warnock but wants around £2million on top.

£4 million for Lucas Neill which have just one year left of contract...A way to much valued IMO.If Liverpool agree to this statement then they will be the joke of year.Liverpool seems to appear desperate to get this ordinary player and Blackburn can see they are and put a fucking joke value on this ordinary player.Liverpool should be rational and realize that they can't pay more for players then they are worth only because they are a big club.Cool down the intererest. It's only Lucas Neill for christ sake...

Salif Diao has turn down the contract offer from Recreativo de Huelva and decided to stay at Merseyside. It seems hard to get rid of Diao with his lucrative contract with Liverpool.Diao is more a moneybag then a football player. He's a piece of shit and I can't see the talent Houllier saw in him.

He once put in a brilliant, last-minute cross for Heskey to score an equaliser against Arsenal, four years ago. Then he sat down.

Jan Kromkamp has brought his short Anfield career to an end by returning to Holland to sign for PSV Eindhoven.
The Dutch defender only made 18 first team appearances for the Reds after arriving from Villarreal at the start of the year in a deal which saw former defender Josemi moving in the opposite direction.
He made his debut as a substitute in the epic 5-3 win over Luton in January and will leave with an FA Cup winners medal to show for his efforts after being named on the bench for last season's final against West Ham.
