Gerard Houllier has vowed to stick to an attacking philosophy as the Reds go into tomorrow's Merseyside derby still looking for their Premiership victory.
"In terms of our attacking this (against Spurs) was one of the most encouraging Liverpool displays I can remember for a long time," Houllier said.
"This was the way I want my team to play. I have always known in my mind the system I want the players to play and they did everything well except score a goal. All that we lacked was the finishing.
"At times Spurs couldn't cope. They had five bookings, including four of their defenders, and none of them were for dissent. Our pace and movement was too much for them at times. It's just a shame really that we didn't win the game.
"I have to say I was proud of some of our football but disappointed we didn't win.
"Vladi had lots of shots, Milan Baros was close, Steven Gerrard was unlucky and El-Hadji Diouf had a good chance with a header in the second half. The chances were there."
Houllier praised Czech star Smicer in what was his first league outing of the season.
"You have to consider Vladimir Smicer has not played a single match since being injured against Galatasaray in Amsterdam, but he was brilliant on Wednesday," said Houllier.
"Jamie Redknapp came up to me after the match and was full of praise for Vladi. He said he looked a different player and had really become strong now.
"At half-time, Vladi was beginning to tire but I said to him try to keep going for as long as possible. In the end I had to take him off because he signalled to us he was exhausted. The last thing we wanted was for him to pick up another strain.
"Steven Gerrard was also playing his third game in seven days so Iwas very pleased with him. Steve Finnan had a very good home debut and I thought Igor Biscan played well too.
"I think overall we played with a lot of confidence. It just makes me sad we didn't win the game but I know if we play like that our rewards will come."
