Default Houllier promises more attacking play

Gerard Houllier has vowed to stick to an attacking philosophy as the Reds go into tomorrow's Merseyside derby still looking for their Premiership victory.

"In terms of our attacking this (against Spurs) was one of the most encouraging Liverpool displays I can remember for a long time," Houllier said.

"This was the way I want my team to play. I have always known in my mind the system I want the players to play and they did everything well except score a goal. All that we lacked was the finishing.

"At times Spurs couldn't cope. They had five bookings, including four of their defenders, and none of them were for dissent. Our pace and movement was too much for them at times. It's just a shame really that we didn't win the game.

"I have to say I was proud of some of our football but disappointed we didn't win.

"Vladi had lots of shots, Milan Baros was close, Steven Gerrard was unlucky and El-Hadji Diouf had a good chance with a header in the second half. The chances were there."

Houllier praised Czech star Smicer in what was his first league outing of the season.

"You have to consider Vladimir Smicer has not played a single match since being injured against Galatasaray in Amsterdam, but he was brilliant on Wednesday," said Houllier.

"Jamie Redknapp came up to me after the match and was full of praise for Vladi. He said he looked a different player and had really become strong now.

"At half-time, Vladi was beginning to tire but I said to him try to keep going for as long as possible. In the end I had to take him off because he signalled to us he was exhausted. The last thing we wanted was for him to pick up another strain.

"Steven Gerrard was also playing his third game in seven days so Iwas very pleased with him. Steve Finnan had a very good home debut and I thought Igor Biscan played well too.

"I think overall we played with a lot of confidence. It just makes me sad we didn't win the game but I know if we play like that our rewards will come."

Hoof is a clown, i was at Anfield on Wednesday, we were awful. Dudek is the sole reason that our record doesn't say "Played:3 Won:0 Drawn:0 Lost:3" Villa and Spurs both deserves to beat us.

City will finish in the top 8 IMO. But CL is outta reach for a team with such a poor defense

The Rule, it is not a poor defence at all! Shaun Wright-Phillips was at fault for one of the goals yesterday and he plays right midfield. Most of the time we concede is when the defence just aren't concentrating, simple as, and alot of the time, goals come because of midfield mistakes...

No way are Distin and Sommeil poor!!

Distin is quality, Sommeil is not. He's a decent player but not good enough if you want to make CL. And your fullbacks are far better going forward than they are when it comes to defending.

You must be joking, Sommeil has had a well better start to the season then Distin. Sommeil saved really good chances for Blackburn with last ditch challenges, he has had a good start. If you would of asked me at the beginning of the season who I felt was better, I would of said Distin, but Sommeil is solid and a great defender and at the moment, i'd rather have him then Distin.

Sun Jihai, he is very good going forward but he can defend very well at times too, he was our best player (after Barton probabley) against Blackburn through his defensive efforts... Tarnat hardly goes forward unless were throwing everything at the opposition, his a defensive player and always has been.

"Far better going forward" - wouldn't go that far...

Tarnat is a converted winger! he always bombs forward. Doesn't have the legs to do it anymore, but to call him a defensive player is laughable.

Sommeil is a loon. He makes stupid tackles in dangerous positions, has awful positional sense. Sommeil is a player I've seen over the past 4 years and he always has these little runs where he looks good, but over the course of the season he'll get found out.

Like i said, no CL for City without a top class defender(a proper keeper wouldn't go amiss either)

I know we won't make top 4! Sommeil is quality! But OK you have your opinion...

Are you a City fan? If you are, then you would know Tarnat hardly goes forward unless City TRY and do something from a set piece. Yes, I remember him in his Munich days and yes he did go forward frequently and yes he hasn't got the legs to do it now, so he stays back, so in my books he is now defensive...

And you do know were talking about KK here... defending isn't his thing.

Lets face it, under Keegan you will always be an attacking team.
