The S*n's editor and high powered staff(along with their owner) made up the story about Hillsbrough to sell papers.
The reason there is a (well deserved) backlash against Rooney is because the S*n slagged off everyone from Merseyside for months after hillsbrough, calling us scum and the like. Everton fans have also boycotted the S*n for 15 years. Rooney's father is said to be disgusted with him over it.

Rooney's clearly been very badly advised
I don't specifically blame him
but imo it was a BIG mistake working with the S*N
he doesn't need the money
or a boost to his profile
in fact quite the opposite is clearly true
especially in Liverpool
bad bad mistake
hope his dad gets him2 bin his agency
and stay a toffee for at least one more season

The NOTW is owned by Murdoch but it has different editors, staff etc than the S*n. I personally don't read it but don't have that much of a problem with it and Owen's articles don't bother 99% of the fans.
I've think Rooney's been very badly advised, he's not the brightest lad to start off with and he's very easily influenced by those who are "looking after his interests". I'm pissed at him for being involved with the S*n but don't blame him entirely for his association with them, his agents are the ones at fault.

exactly
the notw isn't the sun
as the article says the reason the boycott has worked and continues2 work
is because it is focused
News International/murdoch own or part own many companies
but it was specifically the S*n that did what it accused scousers off
seeing people dying
and thinking how can I get some money out of this

I'm a little late here but I posted this on another board.
Quote:
S*n
"Dudman said the "entire senior team at the Sun" at the time of the article had now moved on from the paper, "yet we are still being blamed and tarnished for what was a terrible mistake".
|
They still don't get it do they.
This was not a mistake It was a deliberate and inflamitory attempt to degrade Liverpool fans who had died and to make profits from the controversy the scum created.
This was not an apology this was just a continium. "We've apologized, (Sort of) you can't acccept that so you're typical scousers. But it sells papers and that's the bottom line.
It wasn't a MISTAKE.!!! I doubt seriously if there were any informants. This was a pack of lies made up just to sell papers.

And.
The story, headlined "The Truth", alleged some Liverpool fans had picked the pockets of victims and beat up a police officer giving the kiss of life during the Hillsborough stadium disaster, in which 96 people died at an FA Cup semi-final match.
They've "sort of" apologized for a mistake, not for the deliberate lies.
Bastards...!!!

From a friend in Liverpool.
Sick joke. The fact that the staff of The S*n has changed does absolutely nothing to change the equally certain fact that the mentality that pervades "Britain's favourite daily newspaper" is exactly the same in 2004 as it was in 1989. Anyone who thinks Rebecca Wade would make decisions that improve upon Kelvin MacKenzie's instincts over Hillsborough is either delusional or wilfully disingenious.
Rebecca Wade may have been a 20-year old student in 1989, but it was just a few short years later that she was solely responsible for the mob rule campaign of terror that befell a variety of hapless individuals on NIMBY housing estates across Britain during her hysterical NOTW front-page outing campaign against "paedophiles".
Same shit, different decade.
I agree that Wayne Rooney should not be vilified for speaking to a newspaper about himself. I agree with those who have said that his agent, Paul Stretford and the management group he represents should be getting the blame (especially as Stretford is himself from Liverpool). I also agree that Rooney and Stretford should donate the £250,000 they have made from this between them to the HFSG.
I do not agree that The S*n has any right to act this self-rigtheously about what it would clearly love to paint as unseemly intransigence on behalf of the Merseyside public. At the end of the day, the newspaper hasn't changed one iota and is in any case only truly concerned with its continually deadened profits in this part of the country. Using Wayne Rooney's treatment as a back-handed way of addressing this issue is just poor. If Hillsborough happened again tomorrow, The S*n would run stories like that again tomorrow. It's not about what's right, it's about what sells papers - always.
And The S*n, once again demonstrating that they are just as big a shower of fuckers in 2004 as they were in 1989, have proven it again with this joke of an attempt to get the monkey off their back on Merseyside.

than ginger slag named and shamed a list of registered sex offenders
the authorities knew where all of them where
thats how they could be 'named and shamed'
virtually all of them fled
where they where previously getting treatment
and being moderated
now the police do not know where they are
those scumbags care only about money
all their campaigns, apologies and lies are generated for the same reason - sales

Bump
I think this is a very important thread.
I'd like to suggest it be made a sticky. It can be closed if the mod thinks that there's no need for further discussion on it.
Thanks
