Lazio are on the verge of signing Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo, according to the latest reports in South America.

The Biancocelesti have eyed the River Plate No 1 as they look for a new custodian to replace Angelo Peruzzi, who retired from football at the end of last season.

Newspaper Ole claims that Lazio officials travelled to Argentina to discuss the player’s position, finalising a £5.5m deal with the Primera Divisione outfit.

Carrizo, who made his international debut in April at the age of just 22, is set to sign a five-year deal worth £360,000 per season and an official announcement is expected soon.

The transfer seemed close to collapsing over the last few days but President Claudio Lotito [pictured] was determined to land the ‘keeper, who would become the controversial chief’s most expensive signing.

Carrizo could join his new teammates at their pre-season camp in Kapfenberg later this week and Coach Delio Rossi hopes to hand the South American his debut in the friendly against West Ham on July 21.

River Plate goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo is just hours away from completing a move to Lazio after Los Millanarios admitted they couldn’t stop the deal.

The capital club’s search for a replacement for Angelo Perruzzi seems to be over after a month of rumours, speculation and denials.

The transfer has looked almost certain for the last fortnight, but the reluctance of the Argentine outfit’s Coach Daniel Passarella to let the Albiceleste international leave has slowed negotiations.

“Carrizo is now a Lazio player,” admitted River Plate chief director Jose Maria Aguilar. “I never wanted to sell him, but there was nothing I could do as he wanted to go.”

The details of the deal are still hazy, but Biancocelesti President Claudio Lotito is expected to break the bank with whispers suggesting a £5m fee.

The 22-year old talent’s contract offer is likely to stand at around £360,000 per season with an official announcement expected very shortly.

It seems that Carrizo's passport has no problems, and he is expected in Rome on Saturday, looks like the deal will be finally completed.

Lazio could be forced to seek another goalkeeper after new passport problems hit Juan Pablo Carrizo.

The River Plate shot-stopper had agreed a £5.1m move to the Stadio Olimpico, but only if he was able to attain an EC passport.


This weekend it has emerged that the paperwork provided to prove his Italian relatives is not enough to satisfy the authorities.


The last Italian-born figure in his family tree left the country in 1870 for Argentina and he has to prove that none of the following five generations formally gave up their Italian citizenship.


If the bureaucracy drags on, then Lazio will be left without a first choice goalkeeper when the season kicks off on August 25.


Following Angelo Peruzzi’s retirement, the only other real option is 43-year-old Marco Ballotta.


Having already waited over a month to achieve this paperwork, the Biancocelesti are tired of hanging on and could now look for a new Number 1.


Livorno’s Marco Amelia was an option, although he is also a target for Sven Goran Eriksson’s Manchester City.

Carizzo's move from River Plate to Lazio has run into problems, as the Caribineri are investing possible fraud in his application for Italian citizenship (whoda thunk it?); Lazio can't send him back, but need a EU player as they are at their Champions League quota. Carizzo will probably go elswhere in Europe, and Lazio are said to be looking at a bunch of alternatives including Cudicini, Toldo and Amelia. Though all of those are likely to be expensive for Lazio.

Lazio, still on the lookout for a goalkeeper as the transfer window draws to a close, will not be landing Argentinian goalie Juan Pablo Carrizo...

Italian giants Lazio will not be signing Juan Pablo Carrizo after the player failed to gain an Italian passport.

As feared a few days ago (see earlier report here) the player's documentation hit a snag, meaning that his transfer could not be processed in time for Friday's closure of the transfer window.

The clubs have refused to confirm that the player willa rrive on loan, though, the only formal announcement relating to the cancellation of the 7.4 million euro transfer.

A statement issued by the sides said, "Lazio and River Plate would like to communicate that due to bureaucratic reasons, the agreement of July 18 is now no longer valid.

"Carrizo will remain property of River Plate until Lazio can sign him."

Lazio had pursued the 23 year old over the summer but, amidst accusations of incompetence from some of the tifosi, have now failed to land him.

After the retirement of Angelo Peruzzi, Lazio have placed 43 year old Marco Ballotta between the posts for their competitive matches so far this season.

Rumour has it that Lazio are now on the verge of signing Uruguayan stopper Fernando Musiera, currently being touted as the "New Buffon", despite his lack of top-level competition in Europe.

Lazio’s chances of signing Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo are fading, so Christian Abbiati and Marco Amelia are in the frame.

The Biancocelesti provisionally agreed a £5m deal with River Plate for Carrizo in the summer, but complications over his attempt to gain EU-citizenship have stalled the move.

Lazio President Claudio Lotito had expected the problems to be resolved in the New Year, but now it seems that they will have to look elsewhere for a long-term custodian to fill the void left by the retirement of Angelo Peruzzi.

Abbiati is warming the bench at Atletico Madrid – on loan from Milan – and would reportedly welcome a return to the peninsula, prompting whispers that he may be the answer.

Livorno’s Amelia is keen to join a more prestigious club and is eyeing a return to his hometown Rome, although he has stressed his desire to play for Roma rather than Lazio.

The Tuscans are also less than willing to part with a prized asset and are likely to resist the sale.

“I don’t intend to sell Amelia,” President Aldo Spinelli stated. “At the moment we need to keep hold of all our players.”

Lazio’s lawyer Gianmichele Gentile is adamant that Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo’s long awaited transfer will be completed this month.

The Biancocelesti agreed a £5m deal with River Plate in the summer as they looked to replace the retired Angelo Peruzzi.

However, complications over Carrizo’s bid for Italian citizenship caused the move to stall and the capital club have had to make do with much maligned veteran Marco Ballotta.

It had been feared that the deal may fall through, but there is renewed optimism at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I can state with certainty that Carrizo is a Lazio player and that he will arrive at the end of the month as an EU player, rather than in June as a foreigner,” Gentile declared.

“I’m optimistic, but we will have to wait until January 15 for the definite reply. There are only very small problems to be ironed out to do with the city of origin of his great grandfather.”

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is keen to move to Europe as quickly as possible, but seems less confident that he will wear the Lazio shirt this season.

“I could move in January, but my agent is still working on it,” he told Cronaca.

“Maybe I will need to go out on loan to a Spanish side. That’s the plan if the problems with my documents aren’t resolved.

“Whatever happens, I need a new club. I haven’t fallen out with River Plate’s fans but I need to take advantage of my opportunities.”
