MD9: Lazio-Reggina

Serie A Week 9 - 29/10/06 (14.00 UK)
Lazio-Reggina
Stadio Olimpico
It is a battle between the Calciopoli clubs on Sunday as two of the bottom three meet at the Stadio Olimpico looking to further erase the points penalties they were handed at the start of the season. Lazio can finally get out of negative points if they can pick up a win, and though Reggina are still on –4 they will be desperate not to allow a big gap to emerge between themselves and their potential relegation rivals.
Both sides have been dealt a blow due to indiscipline in Week 8. Reggina lose influential midfielder Giacomo Tedesco after his dismissal against Parma, while both Goran Pandev and Giullermo Stendardo were sent off during Lazio’s loss to Sampdoria. With Lazio already missing Stephen Makinwa through injury it means Albanian striker Igli Tare is likely to be drafted in alongside Tommaso Rocchi in the Biancocelesti attack.
Skipper Massimo Oddo does return, however, after serving his two-match ban. But Delio Rossi is still missing Swiss teenager Valon Behrami from the midfield with a long-term injury as well as loan signing Pasquale Foggia. Pressure will begin to mount on the Coach if his side fail to pick up a win against the bottom club, given that the club have taken just one point from the last nine available.
In stark contrast, Walter Mazzarri’s team have lost just once in their last five, picking up the scalp of Roma along the way. Despite a hefty points penalty the Calabrian club have made quick work of wiping out their disadvantage and will be eager to continue their progress.
History suggests a Lazio triumph though. Last season ended with a 3-1 win for the Roman side – even with an empty Curva Nord as the Laziali staged a protest against President Claudio Lotito. In their six previous top Division campaigns the Amaranto have recorded just one win over their opponents at the Stadio Olimpico, faring much better in the return fixture – which they have won for three consecutive years.
Man on fire: Tommaso Rocchi (Lazio) – The shaven-headed striker has three goals to his name this term and has been an ever present in the starting XI.
Last season: Lazio 3-1 Reggina
Form guide: Lazio (W W D L L) Reggina (D D W L W)
Lazio (probable): Peruzzi; Zauri, Siviglia, Cribari, Oddo; Mauri, Ledesma, Mudingayi, Manfredini; Rocchi, Tare
Reggina (probable): Pelizzoli; Aronica, Lucarelli, Giosa; Esteves, Modesto, Amerini, Mesto; Amoruso, Bianchi, Leon

Lazio 0 - 0 Reggina
Stadio Olimpico
Lazio's crisis continues with a disappointing stalemate against the Amaranto, as only Angelo Peruzzi's heroics prevented defeat.
These two sides were both embroiled in the Calciopoli scandal, but the Biancocelesti can consider themselves almost out of the woods. On Friday the CONI Arbitration cut their penalty from 11 points to just three, propelling them to mid-table despite their recent poor form of a draw and two defeats. Reggina are still going through the appeals process, but also expect a discount in due course.
Giacomo Tedesco, Goran Pandev and Gulliermo Stendardo were suspended, but Massimo Oddo returned from a two-match ban to captain Lazio. With Stephen Makinwa and Tommaso Rocchi nursing injuries, Igli Tare was the only fully fit striker at Delio Rossi's disposal, but the ex-Empoli man was able to start.
Luciano Zauri drilled just wide from distance, then Tare's shot was charged down by Alessandro Lucarelli before Missiroli nodded off target. Stefano Mauri flicked the ball up and over a defender to volley over the bar.
Missiroli threaded through for Rolando Bianchi only for the Under-21 international to drill wide from the edge of the area.
After the break Lazio had a double chance to take the lead. First Ivan Pelizzoli parried Tare's strike, then he saved Mauri's follow-up from close range.
Tare tried to take advantage of a woeful Salvatore Aronica backpass, but Pelizzoli bravely rushed out to clear.
Lazio's best chance of the game so far came after 66 minutes, as Pelizzoli flew to palm Mauri's splendid free kick off the line.
Moments later Pelizzoli performed an even more spectacular save to flap Tare's header off the line.
A lucky ricochet fell to Nicola Amoruso only for his two shots to be charged down.
Peruzzi performed miracles in the final stages, as he kept out Carobbio's long-range effort, an Amoruso header and especially Lucarelli's shot from point-blank range.
Cristian Ledesma returned from injury for this game, but was sent off in stoppages for foolishly throwing the ball away in dissent.
Lazio: Peruzzi; Oddo, Siviglia, Cribari, Zauri; Mutarelli (Firmani 83), Mudingayi (Inzaghi 77), Ledesma, Mauri; Tare, Rocchi
Reggina: Pelizzoli; Di Dio (Barilla' 69), Lucarelli, Aronica; Mesto, Esteves, Amerini, Tognozzi (Amoruso 74), Modesto; Bianchi, Missiroli (Carobbio 66)

Sent off: Ledesma 92 (L)
