Default MD8: Sampdoria - Lazio

Quote:
Serie A Week 8 - 25/10/06 (19.30 UK)

Sampdoria - Lazio
Stadio Ferraris

Sampdoria and Lazio will both be hoping for a return to form when they meet at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. They had each seemingly set things in motion for a promising season before recent results cast more doubts over their chances.

Samp in particular know they are testing their fans’ patience. They finally ended their dreadful run of 17 Serie A games without a win in Week 5 when they beat Parma in a 3-2 thriller, but the breaching of that barrier now seems to have been in vain. Giving away a two-goal lead against newly promoted Atalanta at the weekend – ending up as 3-2 losers – must have under pressure boss Walter Novellino tearing his hair out.

There are no injury worries for the Genovese side, but it is a different matter on the suspensions front. Star striker Francesco Flachi is still banned for his involvement in a betting scandal and will remain so until Week 13’s clash with Roma. To make matters worse, defender Cristian Zenoni and revelation Gennaro Del Vecchio have both picked up their own suspensions. That means Andrea Parola is expected to be given a chance to impress Novellino ahead of Ruben Olivera in midfield, while Luigi Sala should shift to right-back to cover Zenoni’s absence.

Things are no better in the Lazio camp, though. Valon Behrami, Stephen Makinwa and Cristian Ledesma make up the Biancocelesti’s injury list and captain Massimo Oddo still has one match to run on the ban he picked up for his red card against Cagliari. Those absences could cost the Aquilotti badly.

Three consecutive wins had seen Lazio eat into their Calciopoli deduction and start to catch on the rest of Serie A, but those victories could have been a false dawn. They will have to face much better opponents than Chievo, Torino and Atalanta, while their goalless draw with Cagliari and defeat to newly-promoted Catania will have set alarm bells ringing. Without their influential captain and the creative talent of Ledesma and Behrami in midfield, they could struggle in Genoa.

Man on fire: Fabio Quagliarella (Sampdoria) – If there was one positive to take away from Samp’s collapse at Atalanta it was the performance of Quagliarella, especially in front of goal.

Last season: Sampdoria 2-0 Lazio

Form guide: Sampdoria (D D W D L) Lazio (W W W D L)

Sampdoria (probable): Castellazzi; Sala, Falcone, Terlizzi, Pieri; Parola, Volpi, Palombo, Franceschini; Quagliarella, Bonazzoli

Lazio (probable): Peruzzi; Belleri, Stendardo, Siviglia, Zauri; Manfredini, Mutarelli, Baronio, Mauri; Rocchi, Pandev

Things are going from bad to worse, I think they might go down at this rate.

Sampdoria 2 - 0 Lazio
Quagliarella 53 (S), Volpi pen 74 (S)
Stadio Ferraris

Sampdoria got back on track after seeing off nine-man Lazio, Delio Rossi's men falling to a second consecutive defeat.

Both sides suffered unexpected defeats at the weekend. Sampdoria threw away a 2-0 lead at Atalanta and Lazio were hammered 3-1 by Catania. Francesco Flachi, Cristian Zenoni and Gennaro Del Vecchio were suspended, with Massimo Oddo sitting out a ban for the Biancocelesti.

Christian Manfredini had the first scoring opportunity of the match, running down the flank and bringing a tough save out of Luca Castellazzi. The ball came out to Tommaso Rocchi, who drilled just wide.

Sergio Volpi attempted a strike from the edge of the box that was smothered by Angelo Peruzzi, as was his free kick.

Just before the break the Blucerchiati rattled the frame of the goal with Palombo's snapshot from 35 metres that took Peruzzi by surprise.

Sampdoria broke through after the restart thanks to a defensive error. Manuele Belleri's error sent Fabio Quagliarella running, as he cut back and placed an angled drive past Peruzzi.

Igli Tare's header was saved with some difficulty and Stefano Mauri's angled drive skimmed the woodwork.

It all went wrong for the visitors when Guillermo Stendardo was sent off for a professional foul on Quagliarella and soon after Volpi converted a penalty to seemingly put the game beyond Lazio with Sebastiano Siviglia holding back Ruben Olivera.

Lazio nonetheless went close to a goal when Tare's angled drive thumped the far post with Castellazzi beaten.

Goran Pandev picked up a second yellow card to leave Lazio in nine men at Marassi.

Sampdoria: Castellazzi; Accardi (Pieri 81), Falcone, Sala, Terlizzi, Franceschini, Palombo, Volpi (Parola 85), Bonanni (Olivera 67), Quagliarella, Bonazzoli

Lazio: Peruzzi; Belleri, Zauri, Stendardo, Siviglia, Manfredini (Bonetto 82), Mudingayi, Ledesma, Mauri (Inzaghi 86), Pandev, Rocchi (Tare 46)

Sent off: Stendaro 70 (L), Pandev 91 (L)

As bad as it looks, a huge weight has been lifted off L'aquile's shoulders. The points deduction has been reduced to -4 and we are now +7 I believe tied with Milan in the table. Hopefullly this will help the psyche of the players who have endured a mediocre start.
