Default Del Piero faces injury lay-off

ROME, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero faces a lengthy layoff after injuring a calf muscle during his side's Serie A match against AS Roma at the weekend.

A report in Monday's La Gazzetta dello Sport suggested Del Piero could be out for up to 45 days and miss Champions League games against Real Sociedad and Olympiakos, as well as Italy's final Euro 2004 qualifier against Azerbaijan on October 12.

The Italian international limped off after 14 minutes of the match at Turin's Stadio delle Alpi, which finished 2-2.

'Straightaway I realized I had a muscular problem and asked for the substitution,' Del Piero was quoted as saying on Juventus's official website.

The club said a more precise recovery time would be known after the striker had tests on Tuesday.

Not good...Italian forwards have been having a terrible bout with injuries in the last few years.

I wonder if conditioning is up to par???

its the harsh treatment the likes of del piero, totti and vieri get.

the defenders in italy basically climb all over them all game and when they manage to get away they get chopped down anyway.

yeah, they used to kill him basically.

this is another reason why it is so hard for strikers to come to italy and play well...the defenders are great, and when you get passed them, they make sure you dont go too far.

Default Del Piero pens new deal

Juventus have announced that Alessandro Del Piero has signed a four-year contract extension.

The Bianconeri captain, who only had a year left on his current deal, is now tied to the club until 30 June 2008.

Del Piero had stated recently that he was close to agreeing terms and the Italian champions announced this morning that a deal was done.

The Italian international will net himself around £5.7m a season, of which around £1.6m will consist of image rights.

The former Padova youngster, who joined Juve in 1993, will now probably end his career in Turin as he will be 34 when his new agreement expires.
