Default Stefano Sorrentino [Recreativo Huelva]

Sorrentino's call for attention Friday 29 February, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Italian goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino is winning high praise at Recreativo Huelva, but he feels he has become a forgotten man in the peninsula.

The 28-year-old played nearly 100 games for Torino between 2001 and 2005 before moving to Spain on loan via AEK Athens.

Sorrentino has been one of La Liga’s most consistent custodians this term at a struggling side, but he claims that won’t hold any sway in his homeland.

“I am happy in Spain because La Liga is a great championship and the country is similar to Italy in its language, culture and mentality,” he said in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“However, I do miss Italy and I feel a little bit forgotten. It doesn’t seem like there is a place for me in Serie A.

“There are so many foreigners and some of these lads are a bit older and more experienced than me.”

With Italian goalkeepers at a premium, the search for an understudy to Gigi Buffon for Euro 2008 is on and Sorrentino hasn’t given up hope of a shock selection.

“I am dreaming of a call from Roberto Donadoni and then a long drive,” he admitted. “ I’d walk to Azzurri camp if I had to.”
