Toni scored his 3rd goal today near the half hour mark. Great through ball, Toni one on one with the goalkeeper and scored with a perfect shot from the outside of his foot. But he seems to have pulled something on his leg during that play, so he got subbed off...

Pretty good, and I'm very satisfied with him.

He seemed to have pulled a muscle, but the latest from the website say it's not serious, and he'll have a 3 day break maximum, so he should be fit to face Hamburg next Sunday.

Donadoni blames Bayern Sunday 9 September, 2007

Roberto Donadoni has blamed Bayern Munich for Luca Toni’s injury and looks ahead to Wednesday’s must-win match in Ukraine.

Toni had hoped to recover from a thigh strain in time to face France last night, but instead was ruled out of next week’s Euro 2008 qualifier as well, so Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta received a late call.


“It is a shame about Toni, as his injury is not serious, but it is painful,” explained the Italy Coach.


“As soon as he kicked the ball, he felt these bad twinges in his thigh. I think in Germany they underestimated the extent of the problem. I really doubt he will play the next game with Bayern Munich.”


The former Fiorentina hitman suffered the injury while scoring a goal in the Bundesliga a fortnight ago and the diagnosis was more and more serious as time went on.


Toni was much missed in the 0-0 draw with France on Saturday evening, as Pippo Inzaghi could not play the same tactical role and was often left isolated upfront.


“I have no regrets, as we could not do any more than that. We have to start learning our own limitations,” said Donadoni of the reigning world champions. “The important thing was not to lose that game.”


The San Siro showdown also saw several other players pick up injuries, but the Coach was more reassuring.


“Andrea Pirlo just got a knock to the ankle. Daniele De Rossi had a few problems in the closing stages, while Gianluca Zambrotta had cramp. Of course we will miss Gennaro Gattuso due to his ban, but overall we should recover.”


As Scotland have leapfrogged Italy into second place in Group B, Wednesday’s trip to Kiev becomes even more decisive than the match with France.


“I am not making calculations. I certainly will not be happy with the draw in Ukraine, as we are going there to win.


“Today my collaborator will arrive and give me the low-down on our next opponents, having watched them closely during their 1-1 draw in Georgia last night. That is when I will start to prepare the match.”

The Munich boss rejected claims by Italy coach Roberto Donadoni that Bayern had underestimated the severity of Toni’s injury. “It was never a secret that Luca has an injury,” Hitzfeld declared, “we did everything we could to get him fit, but it wasn’t enough.“

Toni to miss Schalke clash?

The casualty list of Bayern Munich still includes the name of Luca Toni, back at the club early from the Italy team base as he continues to struggle with a pulled hamstring.

The goal-getter began rehab exercise in Munich on Monday, and will report to chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt on Thursday for a decision on his fitness to resume training.

If the answer is negative, Hitzfeld will not risk the Italian in Saturday’s showdown with Schalke.

Azzurri hitman Luca Toni celebrated his return to action in style by hitting Bayern Munich’s winner in his European debut against Belenenses.

The giant ex-Fiorentina striker enjoyed a dream start to life in the Bundesliga after his £7m move this summer.

However, after three goals in his opening three games in a Bayern shirt, Toni limped off against Hannover 96 and has been sidelined for nearly a month.

Having been forced to pull out of the Italy squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against France and Ukraine, Toni was raring to go as he was handed his first start in European competition.

His goal proved enough to see off Portuguese side Belenenses 1-0 at the the Allianz Arena as Mark Van Bommel’s long ball saw him spring the offside trap to slot home in the 34th minute.

Despite the win, Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was frustrated that his side didn’t make the tie safe ahead of their trip to the Estadio do Restelo.

“Obviously I’m disappointed with the result,” he growled.

“We were hoping for a bit more than 1-0, but I still believe that we are in a very strong position for the return leg.”

Italy’s striking exports Luca Toni and Giuseppe Rossi continue to fire on all cylinders, but there are fears over Azzurri stopper Gianluca Zambrotta.

Toni is enjoying life in the Bundesliga since his £7m summer move from Fiorentina to Bayern Munich and wrote himself on the scoresheet once more last night.

The giant hitman scored Bayern’s third in their 5-0 demolition of Brandenburg minnows Energie Cottbus to take his tally to five goals in six games in Germany.

Parma youth product Rossi is also in fine form and he followed up his brace agaist Real Murcia last weekend with a strike in Villarreal’s 2-0 win over Racing Santander.

However, there was also worrying news from La Liga as Barcelona defender Gianluca Zambrotta limped off in the Blaugrana’s 4-1 thrashing of Real Zaragoza.

It appears that the ex-Juventus man has torn muscle tissue and may face as long as two months out of action which could rule him out of Italy’s vital November 17 clash with Scotland.
