His best shout would've been 97/98, but we look at Alex in the same regard Milanisti look at Paolo Maldini and beg the question where are his personal trophies.
Maldini hampered by the position he plays (which is what makes Canna's achievement so extraordinary) and Del Piero of course by injury.
No injury = Alessandro Del Piero, multiple time Ballon D'Or winner

I agree with Muscolino. The award went to Zizou though.
Look at it this way JD, it's like an exceptional player like Henry going through his entire career and not winning it. When we know he's probably the best at what he does.
The same with Maldini. It's crazy really.

97-98, Del Piero was top scorer in Italy as well as the CL no?
Cannavaro's performance at the world was amazing. His performances for Juve were good, and his performances with Madrid r ok. Gigi on other other hand has been good, good and good. Regardless, they're both very good players, and im glad they're now getting the attention they deserve.

He finished top scorer in the CL but I'm sure he wasn't top GS in Serie A, I'm sure it was Bierhoff. Still had an awesome season though.

I had to add in this quote from the BBC version of this story:
Quote:
....
But Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes striker Thierry Henry should have won the award
"Congratulations to Cannavaro if that is the case - but for me there is only one candidate this year and that is Thierry Henry," said Wenger.
"He was the top goalscorer in England, the best player in England, the second-highest goalscorer in Europe behind Luca Toni.
"He played in the Champions League final and he played in the World Cup final."
|
Wenger's logic is brilliant. If those are the criteria Wenger judges players on then surely Toni has a better shout for the award? He was top scorer in Italy, top scorer in Europe, he played in the WC final too , the difference being he got a winners medal.

I've told you before, Henry didn't get many assists last season - only 7 in the league while Toni scored 4 more goals (no idea how many assists he got) than him (advantage Toni IMO). Plus World Cup winners medal >>>>>>>>> WC & CL runners up medals.

You underrate Toni.
Henry is technically better but Toni is a beast. It depends what you are looking for in a striker as they are both different.
On last seasons form Toni was better (goals).

as u know fitba is about more than just goals
as indicated by your (imo mostly correct) cheerleading of ADP
I don't underr8 Toni
as u say he is a beast and fulfills a different role to Henry
I just think the total football talisman role of henry (over the last 5 years his role this season is seemingly diff) is a more impressive and important role
Henry is one of the worlds top few footballers in general
Toni is one of the worlds best target men

Henry is better overall, since he can run with the ball. Toni, for his role, is 1 of the best in the world. Good finisher, good positioning, and strong on the ball.

Gianni Rivera, former golden ball winner, brought up some good points.
Firstly, that it wouldn't look good if a player in serie b/Italy won it, which is y Cannavaro will win.
Secondly, that had Buffon let in any goals, Cannavaro's performances wouldn't have looked so spotless. Which is true. One need only look at the semi-finals and finals, where Buffon was the difference. Gigi's save on Zidane was a game breaker, and even Zidane could do nothing but scream in disbelief.
Thats not to mention over a yr, Buffon has been more consistent on average.
Cannavaro is a good choice, but Buffon is 1 of a kind. He is the closest a goalie will come to winning it in a long time.
