Walters winner for Ipswich
Quote:
Ipswich Town went level on points with Coventry at the top of the Championship thanks to a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Portman Road.
Jim Magilton's side were the stronger throughout and were rewarded with a goal from Jonathan Walters on 72 minutes which continued their 100 per cent home record to start the season.
After a quiet opening 30 minutes, the game came to life with just over ten minutes remaining in the first half when Neil Alexander made an excellent save diving to his left to keep out Stuart Green's free-kick.
Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni was at the centre of a controversy just before the break when he handled outside his area after a moment of madness which saw him race out of his goal to chase down Alan Lee near the right touchline.
The Ipswich fans were calling for Speroni to be shown a straight red card, but following consultation with his assistant, referee Andy D'Urso decided just to book the Argentine.
From the resulting free-kick Tommy Miller sent a shot curling just wide while on the stroke of half-time Gary Roberts and Green forced comfortable low saves out of Speroni and Alexander respectively and Pablo Counago flashed a shot across goal.
Lee was attempting to score in each of the first four games of the season and he saw a shot saved on 63 minutes when he found space to send an effort on goal after some neat close control inside the Palace box.
Miller fired a volley wide before Ipswich finally made the breakthrough with 18 minutes left in match, with Walters stealing in front of his marker and heading home Roberts' cross at the back post.
James Scowcroft had a chance to get an equaliser against his former club but could not direct his header on target from Mark Kennedy's corner in the final minute.
Ipswich substitutes Billy Clarke and Danny Haynes could have both added a second in stoppage time but Speroni made a superb double save to keep out the two youngsters with reaction stops.

Ian Miller is hoping to extend his loan spell at Darlington from Ipswich Town. The defender is due to return to Portman Road after Saturday's League Two encounter at Macclesfield Town. But, having made just one substitute appearance during his time at Ipswich, Miller is keen to stay with Dave Penney's Darlington.

At 22 he's one of our more experienced players! That story makes him sound like a promising youngster trying to break through, when the truth is he is complete and utter cack. Finally after about 100 games the penny has finally dropped he does not have the quality.
Although to be fair at least he tries his hardest, more than can be said about our replacement winger Gary Roberts

Magilton aims for consistency
Quote:
Jim Magilton was happy his Ipswich side bounced back to form with a 4-1 thrashing of Coventry.
The Tractor Boys had suffered successive away defeats but cruised to victory against The Sky Blues at Portman Road.
Pablo Counago scored twice and Jason De Vos and Jonathan Walters also netted as Ipswich maintained a 100 per cent home record.
"We needed to get out of the blocks quickly and we capitalised on that to score some good goals," Magilton said.
"We have applied ourselves well in training all week after I was critical of the display at West Brom.
"We need to have the same sort of performance from the players away from home. I wish we could bottle this sort of form for our away games."
Very poor
Coventry manager Iain Dowie was far from pleased with the defending on show from his side on Saturday evening.
"One team could defend and the other couldn't. We gave a very poor defensive display," Dowie added.
"The first goal we conceded was a litany of errors. I put it down as a blip. I hope it's only a blip because I cannot put up with defending like that.
"We will all have to work hard on the training ground during the week."

Jim Magilton has confirmed he is interested in bringing Hibernian centre-back Rob Jones to Portman Road. Magilton was in attendance at Easter Road on Sunday as Jones captained Hibs to victory over Celtic, and the Northern Irishman has revealed he is keen to watch him again.

Ipswich chief Jim Magilton is set to target Poland for new recruits. Magilton has seen the likes of Grzegorz Rasiak, Marek Saganowski and Artur Boruc make an impact in British football over recent seasons and he is now looking at Eastern Europe as a hunting ground. Magilton sent chief scout Steve McCall to Poland last week to assess some potential targets.

Like the sound of that Rob Jones, never seen him, but he's a big bugger alright!! Type of defender we need, where nothing beats him in the air.

Ipswich have handed a trial to Slovakian defender Jozef Adamik. The 22-year-old is set to spend a week at Portman Road as he looks to impress Town boss Jim Magilton. Adamik plies his trade for ZTS Dubnica and he has represented Slovakia at Under 21 level.

Not many trialists seem to make the grade here especially under Magilton. He's just going through the motions hoping Naylors recovery will cure all ills.

Brighton are in talks with Ipswich Town with a view to extending the loan spell of Matt Richards for another month. Richards appears to be surplus to requirements at Portman Road and has helped the Seagulls to four consecutive clean sheets in League One.
