Default Inter accept Dubai challenge

Inter accept Dubai challenge Monday 22 October, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter will take part in January 2008’s Mohammed Bin Rashid International Football Championship in Dubai.

Lazio lost out to Benfica in the Final of last year’s four-team tournament and the Nerazzurri will hope to go one better and secure the prize fund of over £1m.

“This championship will provide the perfect climate away from the European winter to keep the team in peak condition for the second half of the season,” Beneamata managing director Ernesto Paolillo enthused.

The other sides to compete will be Brazilian FIFA Club World champions Internacional, Dutch giants Ajax and one other still to be announced with games taking place on January 5 and 7.

Fantastic, I think this is very good for the club, its not too far, and it exposes the club to a different culture.

Our side is big enough where we don't have to risk key players, namely Figo and Zlatan at the moment.

Dubai Cup: Inter beat Ajax on penalties
Saturday, 05 January 2008 20:35:09

DUBAI - Inter beat Ajax on penalties after a 2-2 draw and will face Brazilian outfit Internacional Porto Alegre in Monday's final of the Mohammed bin Rashid International Football Championship.

The Nerazzurri edged in front in the 17th minute of Saturday's Dubai Cup match at the Al-Wasl Stadium when Julio Cruz chested down a Suazo cross and fired past Ajax shotstopper Stekelenburg.

Ajax's reply was immediate, Perez outfoxing Burdisso before sending an unstoppable shot beyond Enrico Alfonso.

Ajax took a 2-1 lead on 63 minutes when Huntelaar converted from the spot after an Alfonso foul on Suarez.

Inter levelled within minutes and once again the scorer was Cruz. Chivu crossed from the corner flag and El Jardinero headed past Stekelenburg.

Second-half sub Mario Balotelli almost snatched a winner for the Nerazzurri but his spectacular shot from an almost impossible angle struck the crossbar.

Mancini's team secured their place in Monday's final with a 3-2 victory in the resulting penalty shootout.

Livescore.com reported Ajax Amsterdam II, and when I saw the 2-2 result, I was like 'wtf?', 'why can't Inter thrash them?'.

Now that I look in the match report here, I see a lot players from Ajax's first team actually, so it doesn't look like the Ajax II.

Inter will now play Internacional (they beat Stuttgart 1-0) in the final.

No doubt.

Inter and Ajax really were having an "exhibition", trust me. They were chatting it up on the sidelines and during the game. They wanted to put on a show. Almost seemed like a charity match.

However I expect a much stroner lineup against our second cousins from Brazil.

Suazo in new injury scare Sunday 6 January, 2008
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Mancini was happy with Inter’s performance against Ajax in the Dubai Cup, but David Suazo has been added to the growing injury list.

Julio Cruz netted twice in the 2-2 draw yesterday evening, the Nerazzurri eventually winning 5-4 on a penalty shoot-out to reach Monday’s Final against Internacional.

Suazo started the match and hit the upright, but pulled up with a thigh problem and more tests will be needed to ascertain the extent of the damage.

“We hope it is nothing serious,” commented Coach Mancini. Even if the strain is minor, it could cause long-term problems, as the team is in the middle of a crucial training regime to set them up for the rest of the season.

“The important thing is to put some petrol in the tank and everyone played well despite the heavy workload of the past few days,” continued the tactician.

“I am very happy with the effort and positive approach of the squad.”

Well we lost this on a wonderful bicycle kick scored by the "other" Inter. 2-1.

I didn't help that we subbed out four or five guys during the half, but Mancini was looking for a run out.

Things sort of turned nasty when Zlatan was fouled hard. He was quickly subbed off, then Materazzi elbowed one of their players when he went up for a ball.

After that, Inter got of their game, and things just turned worse. Pelle, Cordoba picked up cards for very hard challenges. Though I can understand their point....and at that point the game dynamic changed.

Oh well, good to get some games in.
