Roberto Mancini has dedicated Inter’s first Scudetto won ‘on the field’ since 1989 to “all the Interisti.”

The team’s celebrations were postponed on Wednesday with a 3-1 home defeat to Roma, but today’s 2-1 victory in Siena and the Giallorossi’s slip in Bergamo mathematically crowned them Campione d’Italia.

“It is an immense feeling because the squad played an exceptional season and to win with five rounds still to go is truly extraordinary,” said the Coach.

The Nerazzurri were left to stand on the pitch at the Stadio Franchi waiting for the final whistle to go in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Roma.

“The important thing was to win the title, even if we are a little tired at this stage of the campaign. I am very happy for all the fans.”

Mancini had a final dedication as the celebrations kicked off in Siena. “I have nothing in particular to say, other than to dedicate this Scudetto to all the Interisti and my family. Now it’s time to party.”

Inter patron Massimo Moratti was finally able to celebrate the first Scudetto of his 12-year tenure. “At last!”

The President was in the stands at the Stadio Franchi, where the 2-1 win over Siena and news of Roma’s loss to Atalanta by the same scoreline mathematically sealed the title race.

“What can I say? We are happy and I am particularly pleased for the fans,” said the oil baron who was awarded the 2005-06 title by default following the Calciopoli scandal.

He had been hoping to mark the occasion on Wednesday, but the 3-1 defeat to Roma postponed the party he has been awaiting since 1995.

“I think this is the best kind of celebration. As Roberto Mancini says, the more spontaneous it is, the better. We have not organised anything for tonight, just as we had nothing planned on Wednesday.

“Everyone can have fun and enjoy themselves however they see fit. It will also be spontaneous when we return to Milan, as we have not decided what we will do yet.”

Inter had not won the title ‘on the field’ since May 1989, when they beat second-placed Napoli to secure Giovanni Trapattoni’s place in the history books.

Moratti took back the role of President rather than simply patron after the sad death of Giacinto Facchetti earlier this season.

“This title is of course dedicated to Facchetti, as this Scudetto has the mark of his generosity and honesty,” concluded Moratti.

This Inter side will go down in history after setting several new Serie A records – and the best run of victories ever in European League competition.

The season is not over yet and although the mythic quota of 100 points cannot be achieved in the five remaining rounds, Roberto Mancini’s men will certainly be remembered.

From October 25, 2006 to February 25, 2007 they notched up a record 17 consecutive Serie A wins. Not only was this a new best for Italian football, it was the greatest run of results in European League history.

It began with a 4-1 result against Livorno at San Siro and was concluded four months later in the 5-2 win over Catania on neutral turf in Cesena.

The team that had started the run also ended it, as Udinese twice held the Beneamata to a draw this season.

Inter went unbeaten for the opening 31 rounds – the third best run of all time in Serie A. Milan remained unbeaten throughout the 1991-92 campaign, while Fiorentina held out until Week 33 in 1955-56.

However, this is a new record for a 20-team Serie A, as Juventus had only managed 28 rounds in 2005-06.

If we consider last season as well, then the Nerazzurri went unbeaten for 33 consecutive games after the 1-0 loss at Empoli on April 30, 2006 decided by a Marco Materazzi own goal. That cavalcade of 25 wins and eight draws was ended by Wednesday’s 3-1 home defeat to Roma almost exactly a year later.

In all competitions, they had not lost in 39 matches, since the 2-0 Champions League setback to Bayern Munich on September 27, followed by 30 wins and nine draws.

By Week 30 Inter had the highest points per game average in Serie A history, picking up 79 of the 87 available points – 91 per cent.

Mancio’s men also set a new Italian top flight record with 11 consecutive away victories achieved between October 28, 2006 – the Milan derby – and March 18, 2007 at Ascoli.

By winning the title with five games to spare, they match the record set by Torino in the 1947/48 season and Fiorentina in 1955/56.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic insists he is a “lucky charm” and brought a winning mentality to Inter.

“I won with Ajax, with Juventus and now Inter,” said the Swedish hitman. “As I said when I got here – where I go, I win.”

He has certainly been one of the best buys of the summer, as Ibrahimovic – who had been close to joining rivals Milan – is the Nerazzurri’s top scorer this term on 15 Serie A goals.

“My mentality is a winning one. I am simply not happy when I lose, whatever the circumstances.”

Ibra was part of Fabio Capello’s Juve side that won back to back titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06, but both were stripped from his record by the Calciopoli scandal.

“We have worked hard and the results showed that. It was a great year for me and Inter – probably the best campaign of my career.

“We only failed to live up to expectations in the Champions League, but we must win one trophy at a time. It’s always great to celebrate a victory, especially at a side like Inter.”
