Good move for him, if it comes about.

Recoba looks 95% certain to be going to Atletico Madrid, btw. Quite fitting, in a way.

I wish him the best then, and I hope he tears up the Spanish league.

Inter striker Alvaro Recoba has confirmed that he is keen on joining Atletico Madrid. “It would be a great opportunity.”

Reports had suggested that the Uruguayan was on the verge of moving to Spain, as he only appeared sporadically for the Nerazzurri last season and is eager to be granted more playing time.

“There has not been an official offer yet, but my agent Paco Casal will be in Europe next week and will meet official Miguel Angel Gil, with whom he has an excellent relationship,” Recoba told Spanish newspaper AS.

“To play for Atletico is an extraordinary opportunity, they are a great club and I want to join them, even if they don’t qualify for the UEFA Cup,” added El Chino, who joined Inter in 1997.

“I arrived 10 years ago and I have always played here, except for a short spell at Venezia. I grew up with the Nerazzurri, but now it’s time for a change and Atletico offer me this chance.”

The 31-year-old is contracted to Inter until 2008 and President Massimo Moratti, one of his biggest fans, is prepared to let him leave on a free transfer.

“I spoke to Moratti last week, before I left. He is the reason I stayed here so long, but this time we looked each other in the eye and agreed this is the right moment to leave.

“We have always had a special relationship and he will let me go for free, even if I still have a year on my contract, as long as I don’t move to another Italian club,” he explained.

This is the easiest way to say goodbye,” concluded Recoba, who is expected to seal a deal with Atletico next week once the current La Liga season comes to an end.

Recoba abandons Uruguay Sunday 15 July, 2007

Alvaro Recoba has retired from international football after missing the Third Place Final of the Copa America with injury.

The Inter enigma announced his decision after Uruguay’s 3-1 defeat to Mexico, a match he was unable to play in.

Managing just 12 goals in 58 appearances for his country, ‘El Chino’ has seen his career at international and club level blighted by injury and inconsistency.

This season he played only 18 official games for Inter in all competition and there were reports he would retire at the age of 31.

However, he seems set to remain with the Nerazzurri for his 11th campaign.

Recoba moved to Italy in 1998 from Nacional Montevideo and had a brief six-month loan spell at Venezia, almost single-handedly rescuing them from relegation with 10 goals in 19 matches.

So now he's staying?

Surely he won't get a game with Inter's current striker selection.

It was starting to sound like he was on his way to Napoli but it's all gone quiet there, so I don't know.

Inter enigma Alvaro Recoba may finally leave the San Siro after a tempting offer from Qatar side Al Sadd, according to Italian Press reports.

Despite his natural ability, the injury-prone 31-year-old has been a regular scapegoat for the Beneamata faithful due to his close relationship with President Massimo Moratti which many feel borders on nepotism.

Although the Uruguayan has rarely featured in Coach Roberto Mancini’s plans, the Inter patron has been keen to keep him at the club and willing to pay a generous salary.

However, now it seems El Chino may opt to finish his career in Qatar with reports suggesting that a two-year deal at £2.5m per season has been tabled by Al Sadd.

While Cagliari are said to be eyeing a move for Recoba, it is highly unlikely that President Massimo Cellino could come close to such a figure.

The fact that Al Sadd’s Coach Jorge Fossati is also from Uruguay may prove a further motivation for Recoba to join a side that lists Frank Leboeuf and Romario amongst its alumni.

From that article it sounds like he wants a final pay day, but why?

His entire Inter career has been one big financial vacuum, the last thing he needs is more money.

Inter Milan attacker Alvaro Recoba is set to join Torino for the new season.

Inter president Massimo Moratti has already spoken with Torino counterpart Urbano Cairo and is willing to pay a percentage of Recoba's wages to help smooth negotiations.

Torino coach Walter Novellino is delighted with the prospect of working with Recoba and will hold talks with Uruguayan this week about a move to Turin.

Napoli seek Recoba and Cesar Sunday 12 August, 2007

Napoli are making an audacious double bid for Inter duo Alvaro Recoba and Cesar Aparecido.

Il Chino has spent the last 10 years at San Siro, but never quite delivered on his promise due to injury and inconsistency.

With the arrival of so many star players, he has less and less space to shine, so is expected to leave this summer.

Recoba had publicly confessed his desire to reunite with Walter Novellino, the Coach who helped him through the best period of his career when they were at Venezia in 1999.

However, Torino are unwilling to match his wages and the deal does not look set to reach a conclusion.

Instead, Napoli have stepped forward and are ready to make a firm bid for the Uruguayan enigma.

His contract expires in 2008 and it is possible Inter will agree to release Recoba a year early for a minimal fee.

Napoli are also interested in making it a double swoop, as winger Cesar has impressed in pre-season friendlies and is available for transfer.

The Brazilian – who moved from Lazio in January 2006 only to be released on loan to Corinthians and then Livorno – wants to prove he is still the player who did so well at the Stadio Olimpico for four and a half seasons.

Meanwhile, Inter are looking to yet more South American talents. Having lost Alexandre Pato to rivals Milan, they are tracking Boca Juniors youngster Nicolas Gaitan instead.
