Maicon (Inter), Dani Alves (Sevilla) and Rafinha (Schalke) will be 'fighting' in the same competition. Dani would win this I guess. All are quality right backs, and all deserve to be called.

Inter ace Douglas Maicon has told Football Italia that he’s hoping to mirror the career of Marcos Cafu.

“He’s 37 now and doesn’t run quite as much as he did, but he remains my inspiration,” noted the attacking right-back.

“I would love to emulate what he has done, although I doubt I could become the Selecao captain for so many years like he did.

“Brazil have called me up to replace Cafu? There is a generational shift in defence and on the flanks. If I work hard, I know I can do it.”

Maicon has won comparisons with the Milan man after an astonishing first campaign at the San Siro.

After arriving as a virtual unknown from Monaco, the man nicknamed ‘The Colossus’ is now an untouchable figure in the side after also forcing boss Roberto Mancini to find a new position for Javier Zanetti.

“What can I say? Nobody took me seriously,” added the South American. “A Brazilian full-back who had played in France sounded like an insult.

“Then the Mallorca friendly came along, I scored a great goal and everyone realised I could do something good too.

“What I am proudest of is the fact that the captain admitted I am superior in that role, his position. So now Zanetti plays in midfield and I am at right-back.

“That is not something to be sniffed at.”

I know Alvez has had an excellent season but I think you're underestimating Maicon.

In a perfect world I'd have Alvez on the wing and Maicon at RB, now that would be unstoppable.

No im not man i have seen both and honestly alves is on a different level. That is saying nothing bad about maicon he is an excellent player but alves is just above everyone at the moment.

Has the most assists in la liga with 12 Whilst ronladinho has 3 assists in the league,Aimar 5. The later 2 are playmakers and alves is a right back

Also has 5 goals this season.

Maicon faces costly ban Monday 24 September, 2007

Inter’s Brazilian stopper Douglas Maicon will miss three big games after his dismissal against Livorno and there's a touchline ban for Walter Novellino.

Maicon will surely bitterly regret his petulant kick at Livorno’s Erjon Bogdani which has seen him ruled out of the Nerazzurri’s clashes with Sampdoria, Roma and Napoli.

The talented defender suffered a rush of blood as the Beneamata drew 2-2 at the Stadio Armando Picchi and has left Roberto Mancini with a defender shortage as Marco Materazzi and Cristian Chivu are sidelined.

Catania captain Davide Baiocco will miss two matches for comments aimed at referee Danilo Giannoccaro and Siena’s Paul Codrea receives a one-match ban.

Toro tactician Novellino must watch the Granat’s game against Parma from the stands after insulting match official Andrea Gervasoni at the end of the 1-1 draw with Siena.

Maicon: I have much to learn Saturday 8 December, 2007

Inter revelation Douglas Maicon had a bashful response when told Roberto Mancini believed him to be “the world’s best full-back.”

The Brazilian arrived with relatively little fanfare last summer, but has become a firm favourite among fans and teammates for his consistent performances.

This week Nerazzurri Coach Mancini even went so far as to define him “the world’s best full-back,” though Maicon does not agree.

“It is wonderful for me to hear these words from someone who has done so well in Serie A and knows it inside out,” said Maicon.

“I still have a lot to learn. I have put it into my head that I am strong and will try to prove that on the field to help the team achieve the best possible results.”

It was another Brazilian who convinced Maicon to come to Inter, although the one giving the advice may now have changed his mind.

“I thank Adriano, as he is a great friend. He explained to me what the club and the team were like. He also told me to do really well in training, as that is what makes you a first team player,” Maicon told Sky Italia.

“I am not the only one who misses him, as all the squad, the club and fans miss Adri too. He is a great player.”

Adriano is currently in Brazil on an extended recuperation and rehabilitation programme to regain his form.

“He is doing well. I spoke to him a week ago and he is working hard. I think we can get him back as soon as possible in January to help us in our journey right through to the end.”
