Espanyol are hoping to pull off something of a coup by bringing former Real Madrid star Santiago Solari back to La Liga.

The Argentine winger left Real last summer to sign for Internazionale but has failed to make much impact at Guiseppe Meazza.

He has started only three league games for the Serie A titans and has found himself playing second fiddle to compatriot Kily Gonzalez for the majority of the season.

He is eager to move on to secure regular playing time and would be happy to move back to Spain where he played for over six years with Atletico Madrid and city neighbours Real.

Espanyol's talks with Inter are already at an advanced stage and a loan deal for the rest of the season is close to being finalised.

The only stumbling block to any deal is the short space of time in which to complete the paperwork ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

The Catalan outfit are keen to bring in another left-sided midfielder having themselves loaned Albert Riera to Manchester City, but will not move for anyone else if the deal for Solari fails to go through.

Solari is the perfect substitute for a big club. You can use him to everything. However, Inter have a great squad, and they've impressed so far without him. Had been a great deal both For Espanyol and Solari, because he has been a sub for many years now.

When you can't defend for your life, then couple the fact that you can't create nothing, you are doomed in Italy.

Inter midfielder Santiago Solari admits that he is unsure whether he will still be with the club next season.

The Argentine arrived at the San Siro in the summer, but concedes that a lack of first team football may see him ask for another switch.

“I’m not playing in the way I would have liked for Inter, I’ll evaluate everything at the end of the season,” he stated.

Solari finally joined the Nerazzurri in August after a proposed move from Real Madrid initially collapsed in 2002.

However, Solari has struggled to convince boss Roberto Mancini of his ability and has subsequently rarely featured this term.

To make matters worse, his memorable open goal miss against Rangers in the Champions League increased the pressure on him.

Nevertheless, the South American winger was given a chance in the Coppa Italia last week and responded with a back-heeled winner in the 1-0 over Udinese.

Solari is understood to have a number of admirers if he does opt for a change of jersey for the 2006-07 campaign.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Villarreal and Porto are all understood to be monitoring his situation with the Italian club.

Nah, he's just not good. He wasn't good when we started our season in England, and he's gotten progressively worse.

he would be good if he went to a spanish league team...this league doesnt give him the space to run or create. he's very efficient when given space on the wings but here in italy the defenders and midfielders close down spaces so quickly and he just couldnt adapt to it. quality player if in the right league.
