Arrow MD24:Fiorentina v Inter

Quote:
Fiorentina - Inter

Stadio Franchi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter have been in superb form but face one of their toughest tests of the season when they visit the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The Viola will be determined to put pressure on the top three with a win here and in the process could more-or-less hand the Scudetto to Juventus.

After Milan dropped points against Sampdoria last weekend, the Gigliati gained ground with a nervy 1-0 win over bottom-side Lecce. Luca Toni is maintaining a devastating goal scoring pace with his Capocannoniere tally of 20 and will undoubtedly be giving Inter's defence some sleepless nights.

However, Inter are 14 games unbeaten in Serie A and will approach this clash with confidence. The Nerazzurri are now the only side apart from Juventus with any genuine title aspirations, but know that any slip-up would now render the Scudetto a pipe-dream. Mancini's men edged past Chievo 1-0 last weekend but will need to show a lot more if they are to prevail here.

Cesare Prandelli has no new injury worries. The visitors have the usual absentees – Jose Ze Maria, Marco Andreolli, Alvaro Recoba, Giuseppe Favalli and Cristiano Zanetti are all still out of action. New signing Cesar is also not match fit and Obafemi Martins remains on international duty with Nigeria at the African Nations Cup.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina: Lobont; Ujfalusi, Dainelli, Kroldrup, Pasqual; Fiore, Pazienza, Donadel, Jorgensen; Pazzini, Toni

Inter: Julio Cesar, J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Burdisso, Figo: Veron, Cambiasso, Stankovic; Cruz, Adriano

This one is going to be a hard one. Juve should of lost their match against them, and I feel we will be in tough here.

Never say never. However I think he will move on. Damage is done. If he's smart, he would remain, as Toni is not getting any younger, and he would make a nice strike partner for him.

In regards to this game, this is going to be hard. As hard as playing in Turin. Difficult match this will be.

To win inter must attack, not let fiorentina have good view of the pitch.
I almost hope materazzi plays this one considering he played the best match of his life against tomi last time. I'm sure samuel will do the trick though.

Tuned in just in time to see Fiorentina grab a second and now proceeding to sit on their lead..oop, scrap that - Viola on the counter, Brocchi doing his best Totti impression and driving his team to a near third, but alas Cordoba forces the corner.
Ah well..it would've been better for the Sunday game if you'd pick 3pts up in Firenze, but it's always difficult..

EDIT: lmao @ Brocchi with the carrot up his nose, what a character.

EDIT II: Recoba scores a neat freekick to pull one back. Game on.

EDIT III: Inter lose. Zlatan loses his hair.

As if we were still in it. However losing in Florence is nothing to be ashamed of.

The first goal by Brocchi I thought Cesar should of had. On the opposite end, their keeper was great, and made some key save earlier on to win it for them.

Again, my only complaint from Mancini is that he waited too long to make changes.

I feel we also missed Martins today.

Fiorentina 2 - 1 Inter
Brocchi 10 (F), Jimenez 60 (F), Recoba 86 (I)
Stadio Franchi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter's unbeaten run comes to an end after 20 games in all competitions and Fiorentina consolidate fourth place with a winning goal from January signing Luis Jimenez.

Roberto Mancini faced his former club and knew that a win was crucial if they were to have any hope of catching up to leaders Juventus when they come face to face this weekend. Alvaro Recoba returned from a long-term injury, but Cristiano Zanetti, Cesar and Nigerian international Obafemi Martins were still out. Fiorentina have only ever lost here once this season, against Juve, and were putting pressure on Milan for third place.

Valeri Bojinov was on the verge of a move to Inter last month, but instead he was facing them with the Fiorentina jersey.

It was former Inter workhorse Christian Brocchi who opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a long-range strike that took Julio Cesar by surprise. A Manuel Pasqual corner kick was cleared out to 23 metres, where the midfielder unleashed a powerful drive that bounced just in front of the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Inter fought back with Luis Figo just failing to get on the end of a deflected Dejan Stankovic cross, then a Julio Cruz header on Figo's cross was inches wide of the target.

Adriano has struggled to find the net of late and wasted a great chance when he suddenly changed gears and went past the Viola defenders, but instead of rolling across for Cruz, he ballooned over the bar.

Bogdan Lobont was called to keep Fiorentina in the lead with a fine one-handed save on Juan Sebastian Veron. The move continued and the ex-Ajax goalkeeper also had his palms stung by a missile from Stankovic.

Bojinov got away from his marker to meet Pasqual's free kick, but couldn't keep the header on target.

Substitute Luis Jimenez had been on the field for just three minutes when he doubled the Viola's lead. Stefano Fiore chested down the ball and crossed it back in for the Chilean to half-volley home from six yards.

Adriano accidentally struck Brocchi in the face when trying to release himself from a challenge, but the midfielder was able to continue with padding in his nose.

Brocchi spread the play for Martin Jorgensen and only a perfect Ivan Cordoba intervention prevented Luca Toni from tapping in from six yards with Julio Cesar already left behind.

Lobont fumbled a Recoba cross and none of the Inter players could squeeze it in from close range.

Recoba gave the Nerazzurri hope in the closing stages with a spectacular free kick practically from the by-line that dipped mercilessly in off the far post.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina: Lobont; Ujfalusi, Dainelli, Kroldrup, Pasqual; Fiore, Brocchi, Pazienza, Jorgensen; Toni, Bojinov (Jimenez 57)

Inter: Julio Cesar; J Zanetti, Samuel, Cordoba, Burdisso (Pizarro 86); Figo, Cambiasso (Kily Gonzalez 72), Veron, Stankovic; Adriano, Cruz (Recoba 66)
