I don't think our minds were on this game. Next game we have to get some goals, and get back into this.

Very unfortunate not to bury some goals today. I'm happy we move on. We'll have to pick it up.

The break has hurt this club. I'm glad the next game is at home.

Coppa: Inter edge past Parma Thursday 12 January, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter are through to the last eight of the Italian Cup after some lacklustre Parma finishing in Thursday night’s 0-0 draw. The struggling Serie A outfit created enough chances to at least take the tie into extra-time, but went out after their costly home loss at the Tardini before Christmas.

Despite a striker shortage at the San Siro, boss Roberto Mancini opted to field a Julio Cruz and Adriano partnership given that Inter only had a 1-0 advantage from the first leg. Obafemi Martins, the goal hero in the opening game, started on the bench.

Parma responded with a young and inexperienced outfit, which only included three regulars in the form of Daniele Bonera, Fernando Couto and Domenico Morfeo – with the latter two coming off at half-time.

The first period was not a classic by any means at a cold Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. The substantial difference in class between the two sides was hardly visible, though, in a game that initially lacked the pace and passion of a trademark Cup tie.

Santiago Solari and Adriano both had early efforts on goal for the giants, but the Argentine’s shot was too weak to worry ‘keeper Alfonso De Lucia, while Adriano’s header comfortably flew over the crossbar. David Pizarro, who was given a rare start, had the best of the Nerazzurri chances but his close range effort only found the side netting given the tight angle.

Parma looked to trouble Francesco Toldo, whose agent today insisted that Fiorentina had not been in touch about a possible move, with Ruopolo. The youngster was left all alone in the box, but his effort was straight at the former Italian international. Cigarini tried his luck from distance a little before the break only to see his shot sail high into the sky.

Plucky Parma started well after the half-time oranges. Dedic went close after 52 minutes but his shot finished just wide of Toldo’s right-hand post. Ruopolo then wasted a great opportunity when, even though disturbed by Marco Materazzi, he fired over the bar.

Inter were enjoying a lot of the ball but Parma were defending well. De Lucia kept out an Adriano drive before pulling off a simply scintillating save. A Paolo Cannavaro deflection looked to have caught him out before he somehow managed to arch his back and keep the ball out.

Parma failed to take advantage of such a fine save when Ruopolo again missed a clear chance to ripple the net in the 78th minute. Instead of tucking home a real crowd-silencer, the forward somehow managed to miss the target from a favourable position. Substitute Martins and Solari wasted late openings for Mancio’s men but it mattered not.

Inter will now play Lazio, Mancini’s former club, in the quarter-finals of the trophy they won last season.

Inter 0-0 Parma (1-0 on agg)
