Arrow MD16:Reggina v Inter

Mancini was quick to subdue celebrations after the Derby win, and I expect another full side to battle Reggina.

I would say no, but I'm not certain, furthermore I not sure he would play or start, since Adriano and Martins are clicking.

MILAN - It's already time to think about the next match. The professional and emotional satisfaction for the Milan derby victory remains, but the championship continues and Roberto Mancini wants the team to focus its attention on the Nerazzurri's next Serie A opponents Reggina. On Inter Channel programme Bordo Campo, the Inter coach looked back at Sunday evening's dramatic victory and ahead to next weekend's clash at the Granillo in Reggio Calabria:

Mancini, did you really ever think about fielding a 4-5-1 formation for the derby, something that several media reported during the week?
"I had a few doubts as whether to play with Veron or Cristiano Zanetti alongside Cambiasso. As far as the strikers are concerned I always thought it was better to play two. It is important that there are several solutions available, but my idea for the derby was always the same. I only had one doubt in midfield, but not that big a doubt."

The team's attitude has been very positive lately - you have run play from the start. The maturity you requested a while ago has therefore been confirmed match after match. Are you satisfied?
"The boys interpreted the derby well right from the start. They tried to play and run the match against a very strong team that usually never lets their opponents run play. This is something else they deserve merit for."

Two penalties were given that would not normally be given. What do you think about this?
"From the bench you can't see absolutely anything. I couldn't judge these episodes live."

Some people have said that Milan were out of sorts. Do you think that in this way they want to diminish the value of Inter's performance?
"Yes, I think so, because Inter really deserved to win last night's game. Milan never usually let their opponents play so much, they always try to keep possession and they don't easily give chances away. Inter played better than Milan yesterday and this means that the boys played very well."

For Inter was it the perfect match with all the right moves made?
(Mancini smiles) "The game would have been perfect if we hadn't let in the second goal with a few minutes to go. But it's fine like this, and perhaps it was even better because of this."

Obafemi Martins returned to scoring in the championship, Adriano scored a brace and was decisive in the move that led to Martins' goal. The Nerazzurri strikers gave a great performance. Are the goals scored in the derby worth double?
"Two goals in such an important match are certainly worth a bit extra. For me it's important for our strikers to continue scoring and we will see how it goes in Reggio Calabria next Sunday at a ground that I consider to be very difficult."

Let's go back to Jaap Stam's goal and the famous concept of zonal rather than man marking from set pieces. Is letting players run in to get to the ball the handicap of zonal defending?
"We have done very well lately when zone marking. We haven't let in many goals and I think yesterday's one was the first of this kind after a long time. Stam, however, can jump very high, but he managed to stay in the air because he leaned on Adriano, and then the ball arrived right on his head. He jumped very well and managed to stay up by leaning on Adriano. So I don't think there is any specific blame for the move."

What has changed in Inter's mind after the derby victory? Could it increase the awareness of your resources?
"This is possible, because we hadn't won a derby for a long time and Milan are one of the best teams in the world. Today we'll enjoy the victory over Milan, but I think that from tomorrow it's normal to think about reality. The victory over the Rossoneri will no longer count. The only thing that counts is what happens next Sunday."

Mancini was hoping that Cagliari would pull off a result in Turin, perhaps forgetting that Nedo Sonetti faced Juventus with three players out disqualified...
(Mancini smiles) "Exactly. I didn't know this... Juventus are in great form at the moment and they deserve to be top of the table. They might have a few more points than they actually deserve, but maybe they will drop some at the right moment. Let's hope so..."

Is the real test of Inter's maturity now the match in Reggio Calabria?
"It's never easy to play in Reggio. They're a team that fights. To win we will need the Inter of the derby. Am I confident? Yes, absolutely."

Serie A Week 16 - 18/12/05 (14.00 UK)
Reggina - Inter

Stadio Granillo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter will be hoping to continue their excellent run of form when they make the long journey south to face Reggina. Spirits are high at the Milan club after Sunday’s derby win and they go into this game on the back of four straight wins. Now up to second place in the League table, club President Giacinto Facchetti has even claimed they are capable of catching Juventus and finally bringing the Scudetto back to the blue half of Milan.

Inter are not the only ones who have seen an improvement in recent weeks though. Reggina are steadily building a gap between themselves and the relegation zone, which now stands at seven points. They have also gone four matches without suffering a defeat and have won all of their last three home games. Coach Walter Mazzarri will be hoping that they can continue that run to cause a major upset in this encounter.

It is no coincidence that the Nerazzurri’s excellent run has occurred at the same time as the return to form of star striker Adriano. He has looked far from his usual brilliant self at times this season, but seems to have rediscovered his golden touch. After the Brazilian international scored three times in his last two games, the Amaranto will be looking to their defence to try and nullify his threat. They will have their work cut out for them as ‘keeper Ivan Pelizzoli is still injured and defender Ivan Franceschini is suspended following his sending-off against Ascoli.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reggina (probable): Pavarini; Lanzaro, De Rosa, Lucarelli, Modesto; Mesto, Paredes, Carobbio, Biondini; Cozza; Vigiani

Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; J Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Favalli; Stankovic, Cambiasso; Veron, Figo, Martins; Adriano

4-0! yeah baby yeah! what a performance from Figo. Thanks to the draw in Rome the lead is down to 8 now. There's still a lot of season to go, anything can happen ...

Awesome performance today. Slowly coming together. Backline is playing tight.

All players seem to know their responsibilities, and they are working with the system. The winter break is nice. I think we'll be alright.

I hope Ajax was watching today.

I think you'll find that there was only a small minority that were bashing Mancio. (maybe like one Inter supporter). The rest of us backed him & even said he'd be right for a long term solution at the club. With Inter, players & staff alike; we always know we are capable of this form. Problem is, we also know the other side of the coin at Inter - 'cara y cruz' as they say in Spain.

There was more than one, but I think most understood that firing the coach isn't always the answer, and we have to let his plan come to play.

One thing im worried is our club chosing the Cl over the scudetto this season and Im woried Inter may take advantage of that, I would love it if we win both, but with an 8 points cushion, our club cannot afford any more slip ups especially when a team like Inter keep winning.
