Yeah. Romania could still go through even if they loose (maximum by two goals down), and Italy v France ends in a draw.

Maldini Tells Van Basten: Lose & Forget Milan Job
Former Italy coach Cesare Maldini is confident that Holland will not deliberately lose their match against Romania on Tuesday night because if they do so Marco Van Basten can forget any ambitions he has of coaching in Serie A.

The Dutch have already qualified for the quarter finals as group winners having thrashed Italy and France 3-0 and 4-1 respectively in their first two games.

Both World Cup finalists must now go for a win in their game, and hope that Holland can do them a favour against Romania.

However there are obvious conspiracy theories that Marco Van Basten’s men may throw the game in order to eliminate France and Italy who are potential semi-final opponents.

Former national team coach Cesare Maldini, who led the Azzurri at the 1998 World Cup today visited the Azzurri training camp, and he believes that Holland will play fair.

“I can guarantee Van Basten and the Dutch's seriousness. I travel the world and I know how they think," said the father of Paolo.

“Against Romania they will play seriously. And I also want to say something else. Van Basten has a two year contract [with Ajax after the Euros] but I know that after he wants to come to coach in Italy.

"Will it be at Milan? We will see. But for sure he will want to arrive in Italy with a clean slate, and he cannot do this by losing to the Romanians on purpose.”

Romania are not going to loose this one, I'm sure. Doesn't matter if Holland are going to play with their 'B' team or not.

Romania managed to get 4 points from Holland in the Qualifications.

They won't loose, again.

Focus on Dutch second string

The mood in the Dutch camp should be great, but there are reproaches from the French camp ahead of Holland's clash with Romania (Tuesday, 20:45).

"I don't know what's the point of that. I hate losing, whether it's table-tennis or a football match against Romania", Robin van Persie declared. "We want to deliver a proper match", Ruud van Nistelrooy added.

Domenech in Marica's bad books

France coach Raymond Domenech ("We had to be very optimistic to believe that Holland will beat Romania") had upsetted the Dutch - but also the Romanians.

"That's typical. Domenech always says such things, I don't know why", full back Cosmin Contra said. Striker Ciprian Marica even dubbed it a "provocation".

Holland already through

The set-up in group C ahead of the final matchday at least explains Domenech's fears. Holland are already through, and a Romanian victory would eliminate World Cup finalists Italy and France.

Marco van Basten promised that "we want to win, not least because we want to keep the happiness." Holland have already defeated Italy (3-0) and France (4-1).

The Dutch coach will nevertheless rest Nigel de Jong (HSV) and Andre Ooijer, who are both on one yellow card, and other key players.

"A historic chance"

The Romanians have already played Holland in qualifying and picked up four points from those two games.

"We've beaten them in qualifying, and now we have a historic chance of reaching the last 8", captain Cristian Chivu said.

Striker Adrian Mutu, who missed a penalty against Italy, promised to "make up for it" against Holland.

We'll Play The Best Team Available - Van Basten

In what might be a statement to regret, Netherlands coach Marco van Basten has declared he will play the best available team in tonight's controversial Euro 2008 encounter against Romania...

The Oranje have secured top spot in the Group of Death with resounding wins over 2006 World Cup winners Italy and runners-up France. They now play the supposed weak link in the group, Romania, not needing a result, while bitter rivals France and Italy will face off against each other hoping Romania don't win.

There have been pleas for fair play from the Dutch - particularly from Italy, who fear a repeat of Korea 2002, or perhaps more accurately Netherlands-Belgium 2004 - with the legendary Cesare Maldini going as far as to almost threaten him with the fact he would never be allowed to coach his beloved Milan should he 'throw' this game. However, as Luiz Felipe Scolari of Portugal and Slaven Bilic of Croatia have done before him, and Luis Aragones of Spain will no doubt do after, van Basten - as manager of a side who have guaranteed first place going into their final game - is expected to rest the vast majority of his first team.

However, Euro2008.com quotes the former striker - who won this competition in 1988 as a player - as saying he will field the best available team. This could be a statement the Dutch legend comes to regret by the end of the evening, unless there is of course a covering excuse of a stomach bug putting several of the first eleven out of contention.

"We are taking the game very seriously and will play the best available team against Romania," declared van Basten, before adding, "I am not saying anything about the starting lineup.

"I will tell the players first tomorrow and only after that will I make it public. We have a very professional group of 23 players, so we go into the game with the same concentration and desire as we always do."
