Beenhakker under pressure

Poland coach Leo Beenhakker could be sacked if Poland fail to qualify for the knock-out stages with victory over Croatia on Monday (20:45).

"I love my job. But if the representatives of the football association think that Janusz Wojcik is the better option, then I'll take it on the chin", Beenhakker told a Polish newspaper. Wojcik had won the Silver Medal with Poland at the 1992 Olympics.

Beenhakker furious

"There's no doubt that Beenhakker will be our coach until October 2009. And I hope that his contract will be extended automatically then - that would mean we had qualified for the 2010 World Cup", Michal Listkiewicz - the president of the Polish FA - tried to calm the waves.

Beenhakker had been furious at the Polish media and because of the bad mood in the Polish camp. "I need optimistic people who search for solutions. If you only talk about what's bad then you'll never move forward", the coach declared.

"Our chances are small"

Poland need help from Austria to reach the quarter-final. Only a defeat for Germany and a win over Croatia - higher than the Austrian over the DFB team - would see Poland reach the last 8.

"Our chances are small", Wolfsburg midfielder Jacel Krzynowek knows. Skipper Maciej Zurawski (thigh) is ruled out, Hertha's Lukasz Piszczek (ankle) is doubtful.

Croatian second string

Croatia are expected to rest most key players with the quarter-final and first place in group B already secured. "We'll take no risks, we're not that stupid", coach Slaven Bilic said.

Vlatko Markovic has set his sights already set on the final anyway. "Holland are the only team that can stand our pace", the president of the Croatian FA boasted

Why?

It would change nothing. It is not on goal difference but on direct comparision and Croatia won against us. So they are first of this group no matter what happens.
