Default Maldini ponders Italy U-turn

Milan veteran Paolo Maldini has left the door open for a dramatic return to international football.

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni wants the defender in his Euro 2004 squad and the 36-year-old has hinted it could happen.

"I must firstly talk with Trapattoni and then I will talk to the media," Maldini told TV programme Studio Sport.

"Trapattoni and myself have agreed to discuss the matter at the end of the season. That meeting will happen."

The power of playing for the Azzurri is too great....

Maldini is one of my favourite players in football and ofcourse I'd love to see him wear the Azzuri colours this summer again, it would especially be nice to see the Nesta - Maldini duo shine at the tournament

But I'd understand his decision completely if he decides not to return. He has been playing great ever since he left the national team and he was treated like $hit when he had a not so great WC in Korea and Japan, Trap didn't even try to defend him, he didn't have the guts, he only tried to save his own a$$

Forget it mate. He should retire now. He has achieved everything in football and if he were to make a comeback now it would be a big mistake. Maldini has had a great career but he will be found out at international level if he contemplates a return.

Very bad logic on Maldini's part, if this is true. Unfortunately, the only people he punishes, by taking this action, is himself and the fans.

I personally think he'll play, as this team could be the best he has ever played for..if he does.

I agree Parma, I understand his fustration with Trap, but by not going, he's not punishing him, only himself and the fans...like you said.

Well it will come in time...towards Maldini's choice if he wants to play or not it would be nice and all but i think no matter how much bantering people do it will truely in the end be up to him and how he feels.

We'll just have to respect his decision, even his age is a reason itself, I think he has the right to take a little rest now ::
