Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni has gone against the grain and claimed he is content that all the Italian clubs are out of Europe.
“Obviously everyone is disappointed,” he said on RAI television programme ‘Porta a Porta’, “but speaking egotistically it’s not bad at all.”
In the last fortnight Milan and Inter have been eliminated from the Champions’ League and UEFA Cup respectively, leaving no Italian representation in the semi-finals.
However, this does allow the players to rest from an otherwise packed fixture list ahead of the Euro 2004 Championships this summer.
Despite this ‘favour’ for Trap and his squad, he is still dealing with some worrying fitness problems for star names such as Alessandro Del Piero and Pippo Inzaghi.
The Juventus man has suffered two calf strains this season and he is still fighting towards a comeback from the most recent glitch.
When asked if he would be bringing Del Piero to the Championships in Portugal Trapattoni responded, “We’ll see, as long as he isn’t injured.”
As I figured, there is always a bright side. The added rest should bold well for us.
