Donadoni signs new two year contract
Quote:
Roberto Donadoni is the new Coach of world champions Italy after the departure of boss Marcello Lippi last night.
The 1990 and 1994 World Cup player was in pole position to succeed the Viareggino and he’s been confirmed in the role this evening.
Donadoni, born in 1963, started his playing career at Atalanta before a highly successful move to Milan where he became one of Italy’s best ever wide-midfielders.
The Bergamo-born ace, who also enjoyed a spell in the MLS with New York Metrostars, took up coaching in 2001-02 when he was named as Lecco boss.
His impressive spell with the minnows saw him win the Livorno job where he caught the eye and subsequently joined Genoa.
However, his Marassi stint lasted for just three games as he was quickly sacked by fiery President Enrico Preziosi.
Donadoni returned to Livorno during the 2004-05 campaign where he kept the Amaranto in Serie A after their struggles under axed tactician Franco Colomba.
Yet he left the Tuscan outfit in sensational circumstances last term when despite being as high as sixth in the table, he quit after being publicly criticised by chief Aldo Spinelli.
Donadoni is thought to have signed a two-year contract, even if that has yet to be confirmed, and will be presented to the media on Tuesday in Rome.

Good choice in my book.
I imagine Gentile is upset. Seemed to be a done deal once the "senators" (Buffon, Canavarro, Pirlo & Gattuso) came out in favour of him in today's Gazzetta.

I don't like Gentile, probably because of his refusal to play Cassano at U21 level, that and his BORING footballl!

Gentile is the backup plan I imagine. FIGC favours coaches with club experience.
Boring Rosa? Gentile has an incredible record as coach.

He isn't exacly up to Lippi's quality, but he should be given a chance.

I have to admit Donadoni is a unknown quantity to me as a coach but he was certainly a very intelligent player and from what I read he likes his teams to play postive football. Can't wait for the Euro qualifiers to start

Cesare: Donadoni is too green
If you can't handle the heat...get out of the kitchen! You're coaching the absolute best team in the world today. The first 2 games we did not have our best playing. I believe the next two games will be decisive in his future of the Italian team!
__________________________________________________ __________
Roberto Donadoni has admitted that he was tempted to quit as Italy Coach after enduring a difficult start to life on the Azzurri bench.
The Nazionale obtained a draw with Lithuania and was then defeated 3-1 in the World Cup Final repeat with France in Paris, leaving the qualifiers with Ukraine and Georgia as must-win games.
“I spoke to the CONI chief Gianni Petrucci and told him that I was willing to resign, but he explained what his ideas were and in the end we agreed on the future plans,” said Donadoni in Coverciano, where the squad is gathered in view of Saturday’s match with Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
“There were also rumours suggesting that I may be axed, but I must confess that I felt total support from the Federation – this flattered me and motivated me even more.
“We are aware that Saturday we will have to give our all and remain concentrated, because this is a decisive match and we must win.”
Reports suggest that the Stadio Olimpico may not be totally supportive of the world champions, but the former Livorno tactician doesn’t think this will be the case.
“I don’t see why the Roman supporters would be hostile towards us,” he continued.
“We chose Rome in recognition of Italy’s capital and in order to honour a Roma player [Francesco Totti], who for many reasons will not be part of the match.”
Alex Del Piero will make his return to the Nazionale, along with Luca Toni, and is thrilled of the new opportunity he has been given.
"I am very glad to return and I can’t wait to go onto the pitch,” said the Juve captain.
“It’s exciting to return as a world champion, we must focus on the next two games that are decisive for our qualification to the European Championship.”

Not good. Offering his resignation doesn't exactly express confidence.

I think it will happen sooner or later, if he fails to get us in the Euro he is gone, actually if he doesn't beat the Ukraine, he will be gone.

No, I think he will walk, as the critics and press will be unbearable.

It is quite understandable that he considers quitting.
But it is early too though.
I hope the Italian team get better and better.

He is not going to last if they lose this game at home against the Ukraine since we completely dominated this very team a few months ago.
The pressure is so immense that you can cut it with a knife.
