Default Vieri eyes Azzurri return

Vieri eyes Azzurri return Monday 10 December, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina veteran Christian Vieri has admitted that he wants to play a part for Italy at Euro 2008.

The Azzurri are known to be short of a valid alternative for Luca Toni and the 34-year-old believes he could provide the answer.

“Am I expecting a phone call from boss Roberto Donadoni? No, I’m waiting to be selected for the squad,” Vieri said on Monday.

The much-travelled hitman has 23 goals in 49 games for his country, but his recent injury problems haven’t seen him feature for the Italian side since 2005.

Nevertheless, experienced Coach Fabio Capello is just one man who believes Vieri could be Italy’s secret weapon in Switzerland and Austria during the summer.

“Capello is right when he says I’m ready. It is now important for me to play and score regularly, that’s what I need to win my Azzurri place back,” continued the hitman.

Viola boss Cesare Prandelli is another fan and tipped Vieri to regain his spot in the Giro Azzurro back in September.

“If Vieri carries on working hard like he is at the moment, he will be back in the Italy squad within a few months,” the Viola boss insisted at the time.

Vieri, who has mainly been used as a substitute at the Artemio Franchi, has netted three Serie A goals so far during this campaign.

Any chance?

I'm not so sure.

There is no chance at all I feel. The pecking order is too deep, and I don't think he has done enough of late to warrant a call.

His playing style also works against him. Too many players like him.

Although the article points out the fact that we lack alternatives to Luca Toni, which is true.

Vieri is similar, it's just whether he's fit enough.
