Italy will not refuse a competition. But as Joel said, maybe they will bring some of the younger players or players that have not played for the Azzurri for a while. But Italy should make this a high priority tourny. Brazil fielded a strong lineup when they were in it a few years back...so should Italy in 09.

I think Italy will field a strong team, these tourni's are greta prep for group bonding and all. And to try out one or two new players. Both Brazil and Argentian fielded strong line-ups.

If Brazil can make it. And England or France win Euro. that truly can make for some exciting matches.

We will field a strong lineup, I have no doubt.
I might of jumped the gun on this one, with the Euro coming first, but how we do there will dictate how we play in this, or what formation we use or who we bring.

Italy will play to win, but obviously we won't see the same intensity as other major tournaments. I would like to see Cassano/Gilardino have key roles at this tournament. Both will be around 27ish and one year away from the 2010 WC. Will give them some great exposure and a chance to play together before 2010.

Plus the United States will be there. haha..I think this could potentially be good practice for some of the players they are anticipating bringing up for WC10...I dont think alot of the new guys they want to bring up are going to be ready for Euro 08 so another year would do them good...bring them up as a tryout for WC10 so that when you get there you know what you want to do!

I have to imagine that FIFA will put tremendous pressure on the competing teams to bring their A or A- clubs. This is going to be a worldwide event with high viewership and a wonderful opportunity for South Africa to ascend to the world stage. No need to ruin it with controversy about a lack of quality on the pitch.
Rest assured, the teams who show up in S. Africa in 2009 will be to notch.
Gut feeling...the African teams are going to put on a real crowd pleasng display. I believe that there will be 2 African teams (host- S. Africa and winner or African Nations Cup???)

South Africa would never be in the tournament if they weren't hosting. But I the African teams (maybe not SA) have a good chance of doing well. No doubt they will be greeted by a host of fans. Italy too have a huge support base here.

Egypt book Azzurri date Sunday 10 February, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Egypt have won the African Cup of Nations by beating Cameroon in the Final and will face Italy in next summer’s Confederations Cup.
Mohamed Aboutrika scored the only goal of the game after 77 minutes, pouncing on a Rigobert Song defensive error to turn in Mohamed Zidan’s assist.
Egypt become the first team to retain the trophy twice and celebrate a record sixth edition of the tournament.
As winners of the African Cup of Nations, Egypt will travel to South Africa for the Confederations Cup next summer.
Italy take part as reigning holders of the World Cup, along with CONCACAF Gold Cup winners USA, Asian Cup winners Iraq and Copa America victors Brazil.
South Africa are the host nation, while there are places left over for the winner of the OFC Nations Cup in Oceania and the eventual winners of the Euro 2008 trophy for a total of eight teams.
