Giuseppe Rossi and Arturo Lupoli are in the 26-man squad called by Pierluigi Casiraghi for an Under-21 international get-together.

The players will meet and train at the Coverciano ground from May 7-9 so that the Coach can evaluate their form ahead of the European Championships.

The tournament will be held in Holland from June 10 with the Final on June 23 and Italy are among the early favourites.

There is a new face in Casiraghi’s notebook, Palermo’s third-choice goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

However, he has had to do without Roma and Inter youngsters including Gianluca Curci, Alberto Aquilani and Marco Andreolli.

These players are involved in the Coppa Italia Final, set for Wednesday May 9.

Goalkeepers: Consigli (Sambenedettese), Sirigu (Palermo), Viviano (Brescia);

Defenders: Canini (Cagliari), Chiellini (Juventus), Coda (Udinese), Criscito (Genoa), Mantovani (Chievo), Marzoratti (Empoli), Motta (Udinese), Raggi (Empoli);

Midfielders: Cigarini (Parma), De Martino (Udinese), Dessena (Parma), Lazzari (Piacenza), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Morosini (Bologna), Nocerino (Piacenza), Padoin (Vicenza), Paonessa (Vicenza), Rosina (Torino);

Forwards: Lupoli (Derby County), Palladino (Juventus), Pazzini (Fiorentina), Pellè (Cesena), Rossi (Parma).

Azzurrini Coach Pierluigi Casiraghi has named a preliminary squad of 30 players for the European Under-21 Championship this summer.

The Finals will be held in Holland from June 10 to 23 and five-time champions Italy will face England, Serbia and the Czech Republic in Group B.

Casiraghi has called up 30 players, but the squad will be cut to 23 by May 30, when UEFA must receive the final squads of all teams taking part in the competition.

The Azzurrini will play their first match on June 11 against Serbia and will then play England and the Czech Republic on June 14 and 17.

The winners and runners-up in each of the two groups will play each other over one match to produce the two finalists, with the Final scheduled on June 23 at Groningen’s Euroborg Stadium.

Goalkeepers: Curci (Roma), Viviano (Brescia), Consigli (Sambenedettese)

Defenders: Andreolli (Inter), Canini (Cagliari), Chiellini (Juventus), Coda (Udinese), Criscito (Genoa), Mantovani (Chievo), Marzoratti (Empoli), Motta (Udinese), Potenza (Fiorentina), Raggi (Empoli)

Midfielders: Aquilani (Roma), Cigarini (Parma), De Martino (Udinese), Dessena (Parma), Lazzari (Piacenza), Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Nocerino (Piacenza), Padoin (Vicenza), Rosina (Torino)

Strikers: Lupoli (Derby), Palladino (Juventus), Paonessa (Vicenza), Pazzini (Fiorentina), Pelle` (Cesena), Pozzi (Empoli), Rossi (Parma)

I actually can't wait for this tournament.

It will be nice to see an Azzurri team that is really known for its offensive prowess, not its defensive play.

Andreolli has been playing with Inter, he should be ready.

The rest of the lineup looks very strong, and being drawn with England is great news as far as I'm concerned.

Just incredible. Trust me guys, I have never seen so much potential and future stars in a lineup. We are really rockin now.

Not saying we will, but I doubt the other teams can match us.

Well we're among the favourites to win the tournament and rightly so.

Just look how many of the squad are already regular starters for top Italian clubs. The likes of Chiellini, Montolivo, Pazzini, Rosina and Aquilani could easily play for the full NT right now.

Not all these players will pay for the Azzurri, but many will.

Nice mix of skill, speed and leadership. This team is better than other Italian teams that have won this.

Youu're right Jager, but there are a good 6 or 7 that will definitely play with the big boys, if not already. Rosina, Aquilani, Montolivo, Rossi, Chiellini Pazzini to name a few. Bright future ahead for these kids!

Giorgio Chiellini believes Italy are the favourites for the European Under-21 Championship that kicks off on June 10.

The Azzurrini are the most successful side in the history of the competition, winning five of the last eight editions, but were eliminated in the Group phase in May 2006 after a 1-0 defeat to eventual winners Holland.

“I cannot wait to get started,” said the Juventus full-back. “We are ready and feel stronger than last year.”

The tournament is staged in Holland and Italy are in Group B with England, Serbia and the Czech Republic.

“I see us as the favourites along with Holland, England and Portugal. Personally, I would like to play the Final against the Netherlands so we could make up for past disappointments.”

The campaign begins against Serbia on June 11, then England three days later and finally the Czech Republic on June 17.

The Czechs won the European Under-21 Championships in 2002, while England have not lifted the trophy since 1984.

I tend to agree with Chiellini here, we should be considered among the favourites even with a relatively new squad.
