Jens Lehmann thread
Germany's first-choice goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has slammed his predecessor in the national number one shirt Oliver Kahn and emphasised his dislike for the Bayern Munich captain.
"He takes himself far too seriously and thinks he is very important," Arsenal 'keeper Lehmann told German weekly magazine Der Spiegel.
Lehmann replaced Kahn as Germany's goalkeeper during last summer's World Cup in Germany and the Bayern Munich man has not played for his country since.
Kahn, who is recovering after elbow surgery in the United States last week, said in a recent interview that he "doubts there will be another era of famous goalkeepers in the German shirt."
The egotistical Kahn only holds goalkeeping legends such as Sepp Maier, Toni Schumacher, Bodo Illgner or even himself as worthy of a golden era of world-class players in Germany's number one shirt.
"I don't like it when someone glorifies themself," said 37-year-old Lehmann, who is on the bench at Arsenal even though he has recovered from his own elbow and achilles tendon injuries.
Kahn has previously said the German national team's goalkeeper has to be the first-choice shot-stopper for his club.
"You don't have a chance to win your place in the German side if you can't hold down your place with your club," said Kahn.
Lehmann aims to win back his Arsenal shirt after next Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin followed by the showdown with Group D rivals the Czech Republic four days later in Munich.
Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger says he will "have him back in the side" after the Euro 2008 games with Spanish goalkeeper Manuel Almunia currently wearing the north London club's number one shirt.

Wiese isn't going to get any promotion if he continues with those poor recent performances.

Kahn Slams Lehmann Over Arrogance Claims
Bayern Munich stalwart Oliver Kahn has hit back at Jens Lehmann, the Arsenal goalkeeper, who accused his former Germany teammate of self-importance...
Oliver Kahn hit back at Jens Lehmann in the latest round of 'handbags' between the German goalkeepers.
Kahn debatably started the whole sorry affair with remarks given to the press regarding the state of German goalkeeping, the Bayern Munich veteran stating that there would most likely never be a goalie like Sepp Maier, Toni Schumacher, Bodo Illgner or, indeed, Oliver Kahn in the Nationalelf again.
Lehmann hit back, his comments reigniting the undignified slanging match last week, with Kahn gleefully continuing it in an interview with Kicker most recently.
He spluttered, "Perhaps rather than talk about former colleagues, he should be grateful he has the chance to play in the national team while he doesn't play for his club [Arsenal].
"That has never happened before in the history of German football."
Indeed, the Arsenal 'keeper, plagued by good form, has recently lost his place in the Emirates side to Manuel Almunia, but remains number one at international level, Kahn having retired from the Nationalelf after last year's World Cup.
Putting aside his own tribulations, Lehmann had stated that he was glad to see the back of King Kahn, sneering, "[Oliver] takes himself far too seriously and thinks that he is very important.
"I don't like it when a man glorifies himself."
Kahn, who garnered 86 caps for Germany between 1994 and 2006, is admittedly not one to shrink away from the limelight, but in any case one wonders if Lehmann's confidence may have taken a knock ahead of Saturday's clash between Germany and the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Lehmann given German ultimatum
First the howling errors, then the injury, and now he finds himself the number two at Arsenal. This season has not started well for Jens Lehmann. At least he can rely on being the first choice keeper for the German national team. Or can he?
For the first time both trainer Joachim Löw and manager Oliver Bierhoff have come out and put a little pressure on the 37 year old keeper. More than pressure, they have in fact issued an ultimatum.
“We will wait until after the matches in October and November and see what happens” explained Löw. “Of course we want our players to have as much game time with their clubs sides as possible. If the situation with Jens at Arsenal doesn’t improve, then we will have talks in December.”
Should Lehmann still be the number two at the London side behind Manuel Almunia, then his status as Germany’s number one for the Euro 2008 championships would be in danger.
Team manager Oliver Bierhoff shares this view. “Certain things will be clearer in the winter. In view of the European Championships, it’s important to have a goalkeeper who is playing regularly.
“If that were the case then I would advise Jens to look for a new club, so that he plays more regularly” Bierhoff told Kicker.
He however made it clear that he was astonished as to why Lehmann was not the number one choice at the Emirates Stadium under Arsene Wenger.
“It surprises me that, in view of the performances he has shown in the past few seasons, he has been replaced. “It is a difficult situation, especially for a goalkeeper” Bierhoff reported.
“After the World Cup it was clear to me that we could make the next step to the European Championships with Jens in goal. But the fact is that he has been injured and not played for Arsenal for many weeks. We have to take that into consideration” Löw explained.
But Jogi Löw wouldn’t be Jogi Löw if he didn’t look optimistically to the future and he believes that Lehmann will return as Wenger’s number one at Arsenal.
“I sense it everyday in training that he is highly motivated and is pushing himself to the limit. Jens also believes he will regain his place in the Arsenal goal.”

Löw hails flawless Lehmann
German national trainer Joachim Löw reserved special praise for goalkeeper Jens Lehmann following Germany’s 0-0 draw with the republic of Ireland, which clinched their qualification for the finals of Euro 2008.
The Arsenal keeper had been the subject of much speculation after being picked, despite not currently being the first choice for his club. However the 38 year responded in the perfect way by keeping a clean sheet at Croke Park on Saturday.
“Jens was flawless and he was a solid backbone” Löw said after the game.
“The way he dominated his area was excellent and he picked up a few balls for us off the line.
“Even when he is under discussion he has nerves of steel, looks positive and can concentrate when needed.”
A yellow card for time-wasting means he will not get the chance to consolidate this performance against the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
“Apparently the rule states that a goalkeeper must be booked whenever he touches the ball beyond the sideline” Lehmann joked.
But there were more positives for him in Dublin on Saturday night.
“We have kept a clean sheet and have reached our aim by getting the point we needed” he said. “This very young squad played professionally.”
Timo Hildebrand will take Lehmann's place in Munich on Wednesday.

It's becoming a soap-opera now.
One day he gets criticised, one day he gets praise.
Lehmann himself is with episodes.
One day he stinks, one day he does great.

Yea true but overall, hes a 3rd class keeper, on the media he makes himself look like hes the best but in reality everyone knows what a flop of a keeper he really is, I guess the standard of Germany's keepers have really gone down since Oliver Kahn's retirement.
