Lehmann: Only One Keeper Good Enough To Replace Me
Quote:
Jens Lehmann has in a round about way suggested that the German national team aren't exactly spoiled for choices when it comes to replacing him.
The 38-year-old announced his retirement from international football just over two weeks ago, and since then the debate as to who should replace him on a permanent basis has only intensified, with Timo Hildebrand, Rene Adler, Manuel Neuer, Michael Rensing and Robert Enke all having their champions and detractors.
As for the former Germany number one, he managed to say quite a lot without really saying anything at all on the subject of his probable successor.
"I'm only saying this much: there is one candidate who I feel has the right stuff to be the next Germany keeper,"the VfB Stuttgart star was quoted as saying in Focus Online.
When the reporter pressed Lehmann on whether he might have Hannover 96's Robert Enke in mind, he simply said: "I have respect for him because he didn't just simply go for the easiest options throughout his career.
"That enables him to bounce back quickly in the face of adversity."
Germany boss Joachim Löw recently dropped a heavy hint that Lehmann will be awarded a final call-up as recognition for his contribution to the national team, with a final farewell appearance in the upcoming friendly against England considered a likelihood by many.
"The decision won't rest on me," said Lehmann. "However, there's a chance that I'll appear again for the national team."
