Default Germany - NEWS thread

Quote:
Franz Beckenbauer says Germany are the best in Europe after beating Czech Republic in Prague.

Writing in his column for Bild, the Bayern Munich president was full of praise for the way Joachim Low's men defeated their main rivals in Euro 2008 Group D on Saturday.

"The team played as one. You could almost use every game under Low as a film to show how the game should be played," Beckenbauer enthused.

"At the moment I would dare to say that we are number one in Europe.

"Big countries such as Italy, France and England are all struggling, but the Germans are the only team to have kept their World Cup form going."

The Kaiser was also keen to praise Germany's captain Michael Ballack for his performance in Prague.

He added: "Michael Ballack showed that he is a real captain.

"He got stuck in in defence right from the start and showed his team-mates how they need to fight."

I second that Kaiser. Such a shame Germany didn't win WC'06.

Germans have some good young talent. Much like Portugal, They are progressing over the years. I like there formation and there attack.

If you ask me, Germany should of won the WC.

The Euros will be tough for any team. Look at Greece. A team that has a steady defence and can attack is always dangerous.

Germany were unlucky against Italy. Very good youngster in Germany atm, the team has future.

Euro us tougher for the stronger Europeans teams that than the WC IMO

Default Herrlich handed Germany role

Former BV Borussia Dortmund striker Heiko Herrlich will lead Germany at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea Republic after being named as Paul Schomann's successor.

Long-term planning
German Football Association sporting director Matthias Sammer made the decision to appoint the 35-year-old Herrlich from 1 July, after Schomann led his side to a fifth-placed finish at the UEFA European Under-17 Championships in Belgium to earn a World Cup place. "The change is normal," insisted Sammer. "Because of our long-term work and future planning with this team I decided that Herrlich should be Schomann's successor."

Schomann move
Schomann will now take charge of the Under-15 side, saying: "I am disappointed about this decision because I would have loved to be in charge during the World Cup. It would have been the highlight and conclusion of my three years of work with this team but I have to accept the sporting director's decision." The finals of the U17 World Cup take place between 18 August and 9 September.

Default Former German Trainer Derwall Dies

Juup Derwall, the former German national trainer, has died aged 80 after a short illness.

His biggest success was the European Championship win in 1980, and the World Cup second place in 1982.

German FA President Theo Zwanziger praised Derwall in a statement. “Juup Derwall had a huge part in Germany’s success in the 70’s and the 80’s. The FA and German football have lost a great trainer, who in his prime was a trainer of international repute.”

Derwall was assistant to Helmut Schön between 1970 and 1978, before taking over after the World Cup in Argentina. He won the 1980 European Championship in Italy and took Germany to the 1982 World Cup final in Spain.

Derwall became manager of Turkish side Galatasaray after his time with the national side.

Default Hanke upset at international snub

Hannover striker Mike Hanke has reacted with disbelief at his latest ommission from Joachim Löw’s Germany squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Hanke has scored four Bundesliga goals so far for his new club but has not been included in the squad for the matches with the Republic of Ireland and the Czech Republic.

Cologne striker Patrick Helmes has once again been preferred, despite the fact he plays in the second division and has only scored twice this season.

“I don't want to even comment on the fact that Helmes has been called up and not me” Hanke said. “You can interpret that however you want.”

Hanke last played for Germany in February in the friendly with Switzerland and was also a member of the 2006 World Cup squad.

Many observers had been calling for his selection, following his fine start to the season. However Löw has decided to stick with Helmes, who made his debut in March.
